Cash helps club reach goals
A BUMPER cash giveaway has certainly made the life of Scholes AFC’s groundsman much easier.
The amateur football club applied last year for a share of the Examiner’s £30,000 cash giveaway to fund a new line marking machine for the club.
And club treasurer David Buckley says the £650 equipment has made the world of difference, particularly to the groundsman responsible for looking after the two pitches.
He said: “Without the grant it would not have been possible for us to purchase the new machine.
“The equipment is quite expensive to buy and because we are self-funded we’ve had to divert our funds elsewhere.
“But having this new machine has made life much easier for our groundsman who had been relying on 20-year-old equipment that was falling to bits.
“Before, he had to mix his own paint and pour it onto a roller which was a very unyielding method!
“Now he can be more precise and while before the two pitches took him an hour-and-a-half, now he can whip round in just half-an-hour.”
The St George’s Road club has been playing football in the Holme Valley for more than 80 years.
The club was formed in the 1920s, but folded in 1971 due to a lack of membership.
