Smiles and tears at memorial service for Examiner’s Sudders

HUNDREDS of people remembered Examiner journalist Adrian Sudbury at a memorial service marked by both tears and smiles.

It is a day none will forget.

About 400 friends, family and colleagues packed into Sheffield Cathedral yesterday to celebrate the 27-year-old’s life and the success of his Sign Up For Sudders campaign to raise awareness about bone marrow donation.

Adrian died on August 20 after an 18-month battle against leukaemia.

He had dedicated his final months to campaigning for 17 and 18-year-olds in Britain to be better educated about bone marrow donation in schools and colleges.

He took his fight to the Government, even having an audience with Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Mr Brown threw his backing behind the campaign, along with Health Secretary Alan Johnson and Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families.

Mr Brown was among those who paid tribute to Adrian at the service yesterday, via a video message.

“I was so impressed by his bravery,” he said.

Hollywood star Sean Bean was also at the service.
