Yorkshire award for Adrian Sudbury

ADRIAN Sudbury has won a special regional award.

The 27-year-old Examiner journalist – who died from leukaemia in August – was named the winner of the Richard Whiteley Special Award at last night’s Yorkshire Awards.

It is the latest in several honours for the courageous campaigner who ran a national campaign to raise the profile of bone marrow donation. He successfully urged Prime Minister Gordon Brown to get the message into schools and colleges for the need for youngsters to become bone marrow donors. And he did all this when he knew he was dying from the disease.

His parents, Keith and Kay, were presented with the award at a glittering ceremony at the Hilton in Leeds last night.

Chairman of the awards committee Sir Rodney Walker said: “This award acknowledges remarkable commitment in the face of unbelievable adversity. A young man who made an incredible impact while he knew he was dying. He made all of us think about how inadequate we feel at times and yet he went to Gordon Brown to talk passionately about his cause.”
