Learning curve in the Andes

THE SCHOOL yard games of 1980s Huddersfield are now all the rage in one South American village.

This phenomenon is thanks to Kevin Spencer, 26, of Cowcliffe.

He taught English and PE for six weeks in an Ecuador primary school last year.

And when his pupils got bored of football and basketball, he taught them the lesser-known but equally entertaining Bulldog's Charge and Stuck In The Mud.

He explains: "I just taught them the games that I played at Fixby Junior and Infant School.

"Only it took me ages to learn how to explain the rules in Spanish."

Before Kevin joined the Voluntarios De Occidente scheme, he spoke only limited Spanish, learned mainly in adult education classes.

But it soon improved dramatically, in front of classes of seven to 11-year-olds.

Kevin says: "You don't need to be excellent at Spanish to teach English. But you need to take your lessons in Spanish. On top of my limited language skills, I'd never had any teaching experience before."

Despite this, Kevin was an instant hit with children and families in the tiny Andes village of Porvenir near the city of Ambato.
