Mr Norman Howlings, 90, who was recently honoured by the University of the Third Age, was head of the English Studies department at Huddersfield Polytechnic (now University) at the time of his retirement in 1981.

Mr Howlings, of Park Drive, was presented with a copy of the Times newspaper from the day he was born in recognition of the fact that he has freely given his time as a lecturer since U3A began in Huddersfield 27 years ago.
