A drink-driver rammed a police car while trying to escape from a Huddersfield cul-de-sac where he had been boxed in, a court heard.

Amer Khan was spotted driving erratically in Bradford Road, Fartown, Huddersfield on the evening of February 3 and an officer decided to stop him.

Initially Khan pulled over at the side of the ride but when the officer got out and approached his Toyota, Khan sped off, Philip Adams prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court .

The officer ran back to his vehicle and gave chase. He saw Khan pull out at a junction without giving way causing a taxi to brake to avoid a collision.

He failed to give way at another junction before turning into Three Sisters Square, Hillhouse, a cul-de-sac where the officer pulled up behind him.

Mr Adams said the officer anticipated Khan might abandon the vehicle and run off but instead he reversed back into the police car trying to shunt it out of the way.

He collided with the front nearside wing causing the police car to shift sideways before repeating the manoeuvre and then tried to get out through the space created, but having scraped his vehicle down the side of the police car, became wedged between it and a wall.

At that point Khan did try to run off but was rugby tackled by the officer who then used CS spray on him to subdue him.

At the police station he was found have 66 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the limit being 35. The court heard that was his third time driving over the alcohol limit.

Gillian Batts representing Khan said he expressed remorse for his actions. Misuse of alcohol was the underlying problem for his offending and he could address that under a specific requirement if in the community.

Khan, 38 of Chipperfield Road, Birmingham, was jailed for six months and disqualified from driving for four years after admitting dangerous driving, driving over the limit, having no insurance and driving without a licence.

Recorder Peter Pimm said it was a bad case of dangerous driving and an immediate sentence could not be avoided.
