FRI PM: Full Kirklees District Council Election results
May 7 2010 By Huddersfield Examiner
THE BNP has lost its only seat in Kirklees as Labour bucked the national trend to triumph locally.
Although they remain the biggest party, the Lib Dems moved up to second with the Tories now third. Labour won Heckmondwike from the BNP and Crosland Moor and Netherton from Independent Jackie Grunsell. The Lib Dems won Lindley from the Tories and the Conservatives also lost Holme Valley North to independent Terry Lyons.
The results leave Labour with 24 seats, the Lib Dems up to second with 20 and the Tories have slipped to third with 19.
The three parties are now meeting this weekend to discuss who should be the first elected leader for Kirklees and hold the position for the next four years.
Disappointed Conservative leader Clr Jim Dodds said: "We worked hard in all the wards and were confident of becoming the biggest party, but Kirklees always bucks the national trend."
Labour leader Clr Mehboob Khan said: "I think the Labour party should provide the leadership of the council but Kirklees runs best when it’s run in partnership."
