They are separated by many thousands of miles and totally different cultures.

But young people in Holmfirth are doing their bit to help children in part of Africa.

And now they hope that people will support their efforts through the Examiner’s Wish 2013 project.

Students at Holmfirth High School have been involved with a scheme to help youngsters in Malawi since 2008.

Now they hope that they can raise money to help fund another mercy mission to help the local school there.

Steve Cheesbrough, who is involved with the Holmfirth High School Malawi Partnership, said: “Since 2008 we have supported a poor rural school near Mzuzu in Northern Malawi.

“There are 300 students, most living in tough circumstances, who are being taught in four classes with few resources.

“Education is the way out of poverty for them, enabling them to buy food to feed their families.

“Each year we send useful items such as books, clothes, blankets, baby wear and school materials to Malawi in a container through the Huddersfield-based Christian African Relief Trust.

“It goes to the capital Lilongwe and the Wish money will help pay for the fuel the school needs to cover the cost of the 800km round trip to collect the items and transport them back to their rural village of Masasa.

“We took part in the Wish project last year and in April we were able to send a 40-foot container filled with items for the school and for needy people.

“The Wish money we received last year helped to pay for doors and windows which were built in to the container so that it could be used as a library by the children, reading the books we had sent out.

“The container can also now be used as an extra classroom.”

Malawi is in south-east Africa and is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozambique on the east, south and west.
