A brass band is looking for a little more space as it continues to thrive.

The Skelmanthorpe Brass Band community has swelled to more than 100 members and now boasts three brass bands, various tuition groups and a percussion group.

This means that the group’s band room at Commercial Road in Skelmanthorpe has become crowded and plans are under way for a new extension.

The new and improved rehearsal space requires new flooring and members are hoping that the Examiner’s Wish campaign can help.

Treasurer Catherine Rock said: “We have been very fortunate this year to receive funding for an extension to our band room.

“We’re hoping for some money to go towards kitting out the existing rehearsal area because it’s getting knocked about a bit and needs new flooring.”

The group was given the 100,000 from a trust fund.

The extension work is due to finish in January and will provide an extra rehearsal room, tuition rooms and a kitchen.

It will enable more than one group to rehearse together, which is proving difficult at the moment with so many musicians under one roof.

Last year the group received funding for music and tuition for the training band through the Wish campaign.

It started in 1843 with one group which increased as the numbers soared.

Following a recruitment drive three years ago, another training group was set up.

The group’s Paula Fisher said: “It’s a really thriving organisation and there’s a diversity of ability.

“Our youngest player is six while the oldest is 86 – and he came to us when he was 86!”

In September the Skelmanthorpe B Band represented Yorkshire and came second in the National Brass Band Championships in Cheltenham.

Musicians also have a busy festive season coming up.

Upcoming shows include a Christmas Medley concert with Skelmanthorpe B Band at St Lucius Church, Farnley Tyas, on December 10.

On December 14 there will be a Grand Christmas Concert with Skelmanthorpe Band and New Mill Male Voice Choir.
