‘Corri’ star delighted as appeal strikes gold

HOLMFIRTH branch members have helped swell a building society’s charity appeal – to more than £100,000.

Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation is to donate £108,000 to Macmillan Cancer Support following its recent Give a Gift appeal.

More than £1,000 was raised at the Holmfirth branch which was matched pound for pound by the society’s charitable foundation, resulting in a £2,000 contribution.

The appeal ran throughout December with staff, customers and the public taking part in a host of fundraising activities. Staff and customers at the branch on Victoria Street held a ‘guess the weight of the Christmas cake’ competition and a luxury raffle with prizes donated by local businesses.

The fund will help hundreds of families living with cancer across the UK by providing care grants to cover the unexpected costs such as travel costs to hospital appointments, childcare costs or increased heating bills.

The appeal received tremendous support, including that of Coronation Street star Wendi Peters.

Wendi said: “I am absolutely delighted that the Give a Gift appeal has been such a phenomenal success. £100,000 is a fantastic amount to raise in such a short space of time and I would like to thank everyone who took part in supporting the appeal.”

Louise Neill of the charitable foundation said: “We asked staff and members of the society who they would like to support through the foundation, and the results showed that charities supporting people with cancer were the most popular choice.

“We were hoping for a positive reaction but we are astounded with the level of enthusiasm, dedication and generosity offered to the appeal and would like to offer our sincere thanks to the people of Holmfirth for helping us to raise such a fabulous amount!”
