BIRDSEDGE

Paul Nocton took Sunday’s service at Birdsedge Church. He talked to the children about how many different types of churches there are. He said it didn’t really matter what the church was called – it was our own personal relationship with God that was important and to remember that He loves all of us. He read from Corinthians to illustrate that when we accept God into our lives we become a ‘new creation’. He used the analogy of the caterpillar and butterfly. Next week’s service will be a Mother’s Day service giving the congregation a chance to share their own reminiscences of Mothers.

A Spring Fair will be held on Saturday April 4.

The coffee morning with lunches on Saturday went well, although quieter than some, raising £228 for the refurbishment of the village hall. Arrangements for new equipment in the hall are under way and the committee is busy with opening plans and events to be held as the finishing date draws near.

CLAYTON WEST

The Clayton West UCR Men’s Society held their meeting at on Friday March 13 where the Rev N Percival gave an excellent illustrated show entitled ‘The Eden Project’. The talk started with the lost gardens of Heligan, then moved on to the Eden Project. It was a very informative talk giving some history of the gardens of Heligan which gave a link to the ‘The Eden Project’. The Reverend’s photography was of a high standard and incorporated both stills and motion pictures. The Men’s Society meetings are held in the School room, located behind the Chapel, at the URC Clayton West on alternate Fridays. The next meeting will be the annual general meeting held on Friday March 27 at 7.30pm, Anyone wishing to attend will be most welcome.

At the Methodist Church, last Tuesday the afternoon fellowship enjoyed hearing about the Denby Dale Centre and all the various services it offers. Margaret Firth introduced Jeanette Lodge and Jean Dutton, who are both active at the centre.

Sunday morning worship was led by Alison Caswell, who spoke about the Armour of God. lessons from Joshua and Ephesians were read by Beryl Holt and Les Barber. Stewards were Diana Hunt and Betty Booth, the flowers for the communion table were a gift from Jillian Beevers. Coffee and biscuits, and golden wedding cake from Maxine Lodge were enjoyed after the service.

DENBY DALE

Roy Griffin was the leader of the second of a series of studies based on Faith, Hope and Love arranged by the Churches Together Committee at Zion Wesleyan Reform Church, Denby Dale.

The children’s club met on Friday evening.

On Sunday morning the members of the Sunday School thought about mothers of the Bible and made Mothering Sunday cards. The evening service was led by Tony Hudson who spoke about suffering. The organist was Robert Nuttall.

On Sunday morning there will be a special Family Service for Mothering Sunday at 10.30am when Lily Gilbert will be installed as the new Sunday School Captain. Phill Kerr from Saltaire will be the preacher at the 6pm service.
