FLOCKTON

On Monday , over 100 singers from the Wakefield Diocese attended a ‘Meet, Eat and Sing’ at the Church of St James the Great, Flockton. The event was led by Gordon Appleton, the Project Director for the Northern Initiative, who rehearsed effective but easily accessible choral music. He introduced Lindsay Gray, the new Director of the world-wide Royal School of Church Music, who was delighted with the large number of participants, and was particularly impressed by the welcoming atmosphere of the church and the friendliness and enthusiasm of those present. The refreshments, hinted at in the name of the event, were provided and served by the ladies of the church.

KIRKBURTON

On the third Sunday in Lent,  pastoral minister Malcolm Tibbott welcomed the congregation to a celebration of Sung Eucharist in All Hallows Parish Church, led by the Rev Graham Whitcroft. Janet Jessop led the prayers and there were readings from the first chapter of St Paul’s letter to the Corinthians and the second chapter of the Gospel according to St John. In his sermon Mr Whitcroft took for his theme Supporting the Poor of the World. Gwen Lodge and Margaret Beaumont took up the chalice and paten and Mr Tibbott and Mrs Jessop assisted with the distribution of the Sacrament. Shirley Lingwood and Dennis Goring performed the duties of sidesmen and took up the collection.  After the service the worshippers enjoyed refreshments served by Joy Elson and Pauline Pinder. Doreen Barraclough was the organist.

In the evening members of the congregation joined the young people at The Hub for their monthly service of Cafe Church, Synaxis. They enjoyed milkshakes whilst they watched a NOOMA DVD;  they played a lively game of Bible Myths and in their prayer time wrote their hopes and needs on wood blocks which were then put together to build a model church.The music for the evening was provided by their own Synaxis band,  Hallowed. This youth-led, lively, contemporary act of worship is held on the third Sunday of every month and members extend a warm welcome to everyone who would like to join them.

Members of the Burton Friendship Club met at The Hub on Tuesday afternoon and enjoyed a craft demonstration by Betty Wragg who showed them how to make their own birthday cards.  She was thanked by Hazel Ramsay. The raffle was won by Jean Peck and tea and biscuits were served by Mesdames Ellis, Morton and Calvert.

SHELLEY

Shelley Over 60s met at the Village Hall for their regular meeting last Thursday. The bingo line was won by Vera Rothson and the full house shared by Eve Astin and Dorothy Jessop. The whist high of 88 went to Vera Wilkinson and the low of 69 to Eve Astin from eight tables. Raffle prizes were won by Ted Blythe, Rose Colburn, Arthur Pollard, Sheila Taylor, Margaret Haigh and Marjorie Johnstone. Birthday greetings were given to Mike Lockwood, Barbara Keaveney, Graham Collins, Vernon Secker and Jean Marsland.

BROCKHOLES

Brockholes Women's Institute met on Thursday in the Methodist Church parlour. This month, Alan Scott from BBC Radio spoke on Golden Memories of Variety. It was a very enjoyable evening of music, jokes and entertaining memories of all the theatres of Huddersfield and the acts they used to put on. Nora Fenwick thanked Alan Scott for his talk.Nancy Greenwood won the competition for a fan.

The Rev John Hardy led worship at the Methodist Church. The third symbol was laid on the Lenten Cross. The organist was Mr Michael Brown.

Parish communion at St George's Church was celebrated by Dean Henry Stapleton. Rosalind Watt read the lesson and Roger Kenworthy was the server. Noel Clark was the organist.

Young people of the AD group met and continued preparation for St George's Day celebrations. They refurbished the dragon and practised singing as well as making African-style clay masks under the supervision of Sue Clay and Kate Drake.

HEPWORTH

The monthly Film Night was held in the village hall on Friday night when the film The Counterfeiters, a gripping tale set in Germany in the Nazi period, was shown to an audience of over 50 people.

Saturday night in the village hall was the venue for a School Dinners evening, organised by the community association. ‘Pupils’ came dressed for school and enjoyed an evening of fun and school-type food.

At Holy Trinity church on Sunday morning, the Rev Keith Griffin celebrated parish Eucharist. The reader was Joan Warrender and prayers were led by Simon Cave. The organist was Jane Robertson and in his sermon, the vicar tested the congregation on their knowledge of The Ten Commandments.

The Hepworth Ladies Group held a recipe and tasting evening at the home of member Angela Maden on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday evening, in church, the newly elected Parochial Church Council held their monthly meeting .

HOLMBRIDGE

The Camera Club staged a PhotoShop training session led by Geoff France and Vince Cunningham, Edmund Spavin and Chris Newsome.

On My Way to the Opera House was the title of a talk given by Paul Hudson and Keith Swallow at a meeting of the Women's Institute.

Midweek communion at St David's Church was led by the Rev Geoff Bamford. Ian Gold read the lesson. Meetings of the Over 60s, Monkey Business and Tumble Tots groups were held during the week. Carolyn Burley led Friday evening prayers.
