GOLCAR
The Sunday service at Golcar Baptist Church was conducted by the Rev Chris Thompson who gave the children’s address, the adult address was given by the Rev Ernie Whalley, who is the YBA regional minister. The organist was Calinda Stockhill, the pianist was Chris Woodhead and the servers at communion were Geoff and Anita Ramm.
The annual craft fair was held in the school room at Golcar Providence Church. There were 19 stalls including cakes, Easter egg tombola, and a raffle. Food was served all day and the proceeds for church funds was £1,262. On Sunday morning worship, including communion, was led by the Rev Pam Ward, prayers were led by Stewart Coupland, readings were by Jake Martington and Barbara Brook and the organist was Margaret Israel.
On Tuesday, March 10 the Mother’s Union met in the community room at St John’s Church. Leader Dorothy Holden opened the meeting with prayers and welcomed Margaret Laycock, the church choir leader, as guest speaker, who spoke about her musical background and entertained with some of her favourite songs. Margaret was thanked for a very interesting and informative talk by Marjorie Harrison. The supper ladies Gini Crompton and Heather Royston. Cannon Martin Crompton was the leader of the Parish Communion service at St John’s Church and was also the celebrant for Holy Communion. The old and new testament readings were given by Patricia Walker and Beryl Taylor-Wilkinson, layreader Helen Bentley gave the gospel reading from John Chapter 2 - Jesus Clears the Temple, on which Helen based her sermon. Anne Crosland led intercession prayers. Sunday Club and Sunday Youth joined the latter part of the service and spoke about the Parable of the Lost Coin and the Widows’s Offering, then each child received a gold coin. Margaret Laycock played the piano and Helen Davies the guitar.

LINTHWAITE
The Sunday morning service at Christ Church, Linthwaite was led by the Rev Dick Bradnum, who preached, celebrated Holy Communion and gave a blessing. Lessons were read by Margaret Hunter and Margaret McQuillan, who also led prayers. The evensong service was led by the Rev Julian Perkins who preached, prayed and gave a blessing. Lessons were read by Derek Horne and Margaret McQuillan. The organist was Rhona Jepson. A book sale and coffee morning raised £161 for church funds.
The Sunday Service at Linthwaite Methodist Church was led by Mrs Jean Barraclough who preached about the Ten Commandments and the different ways we find God. The readings were from the Gospel of John (Christ in the Temple) and from the First Epistle to the Corinthians in which Paul talked about foolishness.The whole congregation joined in with the reading of Psalm 19 the – communication process between God and man.
Last week the Methodist Sunday School children sold buns in aid of Red Nose day, and were pleased to be able to hand over £62.

MARSDEN
Morning worship at Marsden United Church on Sunday was led by Rev Jo Archer-Siddall and included Holy Communion. The reader was Jean Broome and the organist was Christine Gledhill.
The Marsden Support Group for Kirkwood Hospice held a coffee morning at the United Church on Saturday, when £167 was raised. The next fund-raising coffee morning will be on Saturday April 18 from 9.30am to 11.30am.
Holy Communion at St Bartholomew's Church was led by the Rev Geoff Clay, the organist was James Harker and Sidepersons were Olivia and Kevin Pursell. Coffee was served by Evelyn Laidlaw, Glenys Ward and Joan Bradbury
MILNSBRIDGE
At Milnsbridge Christadelphian's’ midweek Bible Class Mr R Eglen from Halifax gave a talk on Jezebel and her Legacy. At the Sunday evening meeting a DVD was shown entitled Bible and Science.
Mrs Richardson and Mrs Armitage called the bingo at Milnsbridge Over 60’s. The raffle prizes were won by Mr John Hoyle, Mrs Margaret Dransfield and Mrs B Richardson. There was a trip to Barden Mill at Nelson, Lancashire and Gordon Riggs Garden Centre.
PARKWOOD
A pleasant Wednesday afternoon meeting was held at Parkwood Methodist Church with guest speaker Mrs Sheila Armitage demonstrating sugar craft, including animals made with cream eggs. In the chair was Jean Johnson, and the pianist was Kenneth Rothery. Refreshments were served by Betty Sykes and Barbara Beevers.
Marion Lloyd welcomed the congregation to Parkwood Methodist Church on Sunday morning. The preacher was the Rev Peter Bedford and the pianist was Kenneth Rothery. The Lent symbols of a bag, 40 pieces of silver and a verse reading were placed on the cross. Coffee was served after the service by Gareth Beaumont, followed by the general church meeting. In the chair was the Rev Peter Bedford, secretary Sandra McSweeney, treasurer Joe Lloyd, and circuit steward Elaine Nixon. A spring fair will be held on Saturday, March 28, 10am-2pm, with stalls and refreshments at Parkwood Methodist Church, Longwood.
SLAITHWAITE
Slaithwaite Good Companions met on Thursday and was introduced by Patricia Parkinson. The speaker was Claire Corrigan who demonstrated several Forever Living Aloe Vera cleansing products. It was an entertaining afternoon and she was thanked by Maureen Weaving who was also the pianist.
The service at St James’ Parish Church on Sunday, after an introduction by the Rev Robin Townsend, was conducted by Nields Junior, Infant and Nursery School. The welcome was by Mrs Mulligan, head teacher, and the songs were led by the children, singing Colours of Day and Shine Jesus Shine. Spring poems by Connie, Martha and Alex of Year 3. The early years and Key Stage I children sang Plant a Little Seed with actions and encore. Mrs Mulligan gave the address with theme New Life. Then a couple of sessions of 10 Questions with Mrs Mulligan and Dominic assisting, which in the end produced an egg from one basket and two two-week old puppies from the other, which were carried around church for everyone to admire and the little ones to stroke. Readings by Eve, Jamie and Ewan of Year 6 about Easter, which was followed by a short drama. More readings by Lucy and Meagan of Year 6, the prayers were led by Maiya, Phoebe, Esther and Samantha, from Year 5. After the last song, Sing for Joy, the closing prayer and blessing was given by Rev Robin. The pianist was Hiroko Townsend, and the organist was Alvy Whitehead. A lovely service, and it was wonderful to see the children perform so well. After the coffee break a short service of Holy Communion was celebrated.
At St James’ Church on Monday evening the Lenten meeting was shared with Slaithwaite Methodist Church, led by Rev Robin Townsend, the theme this week being Growing in God. The meeting next week will be at Carr Lane.
The first ramble to 2009 of the Methodist walking Group took place on Saturday. It was held by Jeanne and David Whitwam. Seventeen members walked from Armitage Bridge up top Beaumont Park and back through Netherton.
Women’s fellowship members were entertained on Tuesday by Mr Douglas Bell of Marsden who shows slides of Anglican churches in Lincolnshire and talked about the organs and organist in those churches. Ann Walker was in the chair and led prayers, She thanked Douglas for a most interesting afternoon. Tea and packed were served by the rota ladies and the pianist was Maureen Weaving.
Mr Gordon Ellis was chairman for the Wesley Guild on Thursday and opened the meeting with prayer. He welcomed the speaker the Rev Alan R Boyd who gave a most informative talk on the four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Gordon thanked him for giving such a thought provoking talk. Supper was served by the committee ladies of the Devotional section.
Sunday worship at the Methodist Church was led by the Rev Vere of Halifax. The bag of coins was presented to the cross and the Lenten readings were by Wendy Redfearn and Marjorie Crowther. The Rev Vere opened the service by reading Psalm 84 and Maureen Weaving read from Exodus -The Ten Commandments and Gordon Ellis read from John - Jesus clears the Temple of the money lenders. The organist was Margaret Stephenson.
