In the afternoon, members of the congregation attended Wakefield Cathedral when John Bullimore was installed as lay canon.

Shelley Music Centre Big Band are to play jazz and swing music in church on Friday May 15 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £6, concessions £4, and can be obtained from John Ryder on 01924 848352 and Michael Lee on 01924 840019.

KIRKBURTON

John and Gail Marshall welcomed the congregation to a celebration of Sung Eucharist in All Hallows Parish Church for the third Sunday after Easter. It was led by the Rev Graham Whitcroft. Mrs Susan Whitcroft  led the prayers of intercession and Mrs Doreen Slater gave the readings from the third chapter of the First Epistle General, and tenth chapter of the Gospel according to St John. In his sermon Mr Whitcroft took for his theme Jesus as the Good Shepherd. Norman Berry and Sue Taylor took up the chalice and paten and pastoral minister Betty Cross and Hilary Berry assisted with the distribution of the Sacrament. Janet Jessop and Gwen Lodge  performed the duties of were sidesmen and took up the collection.  After the service the worshippers enjoyed refreshments served by Margaret Beaumont and Phyl Taylor.

The service of  Evensong was led by reader Janet Roberts.  She led the prayers of intercessions and preached a sermon on the theme of The Good Shepherd.

Dot Greenwood gave the reading from the fourth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles and Mrs Beryl Hunt read from the 10thtenth chapter of the Gospel according to St John. Doreen Barraclough was the organist for the day.

In the afternoon Lorraine Lockwood, Vicky Daniels and their team, led a special act of Contemporary Worship at the Hub.  This will be held on the first, fourth and fifth Sundays of the month at 2 o’clock and a warm invitation is extended to all who would like to join them.

SHELLEY

Shelley Over 60s Club held their meeting in the village hall last Thursday. The bingo line was won by Dorothy Greensmith and the full house by Bessie Exley.The first three numbers on one card was won by Vera Wilkinson who received £5. The whist high of 96 was won by Dorothy Greensmith and the low of 63 went to Fred Huddle from eight tables.The monthly minibus draw was won by number 103 – Alison Mettrick. Birthday wishes were sent to Evelyn Astin, Ann Horsley, May Elliot, Berenice Hornsey, Connie Walters, Kathleen Proctor and Kath Oldroyd. Raffle prizes were won by Dorothy Jessop, Ken Cassinelli, Jenny Rose, Mary Hobson, Harry Rose and Molly James.

SKELMANTHORPE

THE preacher at a Sunday morning service at the Wesleyan Reform Church, Skelmanthorpe, was John Orton. Holy Communion was taken during the service and the steward was Miss Susan Wright.
