News and views from the Holme Valley

Sundays service at Holmfirth Christian Centre was led by Elyjoy and Paul Jackson. The Bible reading was given by Becky Gooch, from Ephesians 3:16-21. Carole Paxman spoke on World Changers, looking in the book of Acts for scriptures about the power available by the dwelling of the Holy Spirit. She commented on how important He is to us to accomplish all God wants to accomplish on earth. X'plorers children’s group, was led by Becky Gooch and they looked at not giving up.They created fridge magnet with encouraging scripture readings on them.

Wednesday evening was led by Pastor Ian Gooch with songs about how great God is. The Bible was studied, on the theme of Having Meaningful Time With God. The evening ended with refreshments and cake.

HONLEY

Family communion at St Mary's Church was led by Dean Henry Stapleton. Margaret Wainwright read the lesson and intercessions were led by Jean and Leslie Chadwick. During the afternoon, the Rev David Barnes baptised Maisie Frances Smith, the daughter of Tareth and Johnathan; and Isla Mae Coen, the daughter of Simon and Helen. Pat Green read the lesson and the organist for the day was Vernon Briggs.

UPPERTHONG

Midweek communion at St John's Church was conducted by the Rev Geoff Banks, who was also celebrant. Lunch followed in the meeting room. Family eucharist was led by the Rev Geoff Bamford, who read the gospel, preached the sermon and was celebrant. The readers were Diana Stopford and Les Hopkins, who also led prayers. Philip Broadbent assisted with the chalice and Adam Greenhalgh was the organist. Refreshments were served afterwards by Sue Dawson.

WILSHAW

The May Spring Lunch in Wilshaw Village Hall was very much enjoyed by the members of the Village Institute. A delicious meal had been prepared by Caroline Brown, who was thanked by President Margaret Faulds. After lunch, Mrs Faulds introduced Anne and Colin Spence, who played a delightfully varied programme for acoustic and classical guitar. Jenny Shaw thanked them for "perfect musical entertainment".

WOOLDALE

The service on Sunday at Wooldale Methodist Free Church was led by Roy Horn and the call to worship was the singing of the hymn Spirit of the Living God Fall Afresh On Me.The readings were taken from Isaiah, Matthew and Acts. The theme of the service was the holy spirit. and in the sermon Mr Horn talked of having the spirit within us.The pianist was Robert Bray. There will be no service at the church on Sunday, but on the 31st, it will be back to normal, with a service led by the Rev John Capstick.

The Rev Laura Hardy led worship at the Methodist Church. The organist was Sue Ogden.
