EMLEY
Sprouts and Roots had an end of term party at Emley Parish Church on Thursday July 2. On Saturday afternoon Garry Brown and Jayne Shirley were married by Rev John Marsh. On Sunday morning Worship for All was led by Rev Chris Bullimore. Mavis Jessop led prayers and Malcolm Jessop played the piano. The talked, based on Mark 6 verses 1-13, told the story of Jesus sending out disciples to teach the gospel, heal the sick and perform miracles. The message showed it doesn’t matter who you are in God’s world. The children illustrated the baggage they would take on holiday and read a prayer. In the evening a service of Holy Communion was held.
KIRKBURTON
Members of the Huddersfield Branch of the Royal Signals Association and the congregation were welcomed by pastoral minister, Mr Malcolm Tibbott, when they attended a special celebration of Sung Eucharist in All Hallows Parish Church for the fourth Sunday after Trinity. It was led by the Rev Roger Nelson. Pastoral minister Mrs Betty Cross led the prayers of intercession. Churchwarden Mr John Keighley gave a reading from Paul to the Corinthians and Mr Nelson read from the Gospel according to St Mark. In his sermon Mr Nelson took for his theme, Remembrance. Thanks were expressed to members of the Royal Signals for the donation of a plaque to celebrate the role of the village as a Mobilisation Centre during the war. It is estimated that some 90,000 Signallers were passed through Kirkburton on their way to postings all over the world. Members of the Association took up the chalice and paten and Mr Tibbott and Mrs Hilary Berry assisted with the distribution of the Sacrament. Mr Geoff and Mrs Doreen Slater performed the duties of sidesmen and took up the collection. After the service the worshippers enjoyed refreshments served by Mrs Margaret Beaumont and Mrs Phyl Taylor. The service of Evensong was led by pastoral minister Mrs Betty Cross. She led the prayers of intercessions and, preached a sermon on the theme of Remembrance. Mrs Beryl Hunt gave the reading from Corinthians and Mrs Pauline Pinder read from St Mark. Mrs Doreen Barraclough was the organist for the day.
SHELLEY
Shelley Over 60s Club held their meeting in the Village Hall last Thursday. The bingo line was shared between Barbara Wadsworth and Jenny Rose. The full house was won by Edith Brookes.The first three balls on one card was not won and the prize carried over. The whist high of 91 was shared by Vera Wilkinson and Gladys Stringer, and the low of 68 went to Fred Huddle from seven tables. Members wished a happy birthday to Jean Eskrett, Mary Milnes and Pat Foster and welcomed Jenny Taylor and Carol and Peter Holloway as new members. They held a minute’s silence to mark the passing of Eric Stewart. Raffle prizes were won by Dora Sanders, Kath Jones, Margaret Schofield, Bessie Usher and Harry Rose.
SKELMANTHORPE
Robert Booth of Huddersfield was the preacher at the Wesleyan Reform Chapel. His bible readings were from Mark. Holy Communion service was held and the steward was Thelma Norton. Robert Booth also played the piano.
