CROSLAND MOOR

Members of the Crosland Moor Mothers’ Union were joined by members from Linthwaite Mothers’ Union , the United Benefice branch from Christ Church, as they celebrated Holy Communion in the Lady Chapel at St. Barnabas’ Church, Crosland Moor. The celebrant was the Rev Jenni Honeyman and the readings were given by Brenda Whitaker. Afterwards at the monthly meeting in the church hall, the designated speaker failed to turn up and an impromptu quiz was organised by Sheila Jaworski. The branch leader Joyce Holdsworth chaired the meeting and the hostesses were Andrea Rattigan and Margaret Morelli.

Members of the Association of Christian Fellowship from St. Barnabas’ Church enjoyed their annual August walk, which this year was around the Blackmoorfoot reservoir and surrounding area and then to the Bull’s Head, Blackmoorfoot where they joined the non walkers for a bar meal . The evening was arranged by Janet Haigh and Barbara Dickey.

GOLCAR

Sunday morning worship at Golcar Providence Church was led by the Rev Pam Ward whose subject was David and Goliath. Prayers were led by Winifred Ellis, readings were by Peter Bishop and Bob Dearnley and Chris Pearson was the organist.

The Sunday service at Golcar Baptist Church was conducted by the Rev Chris Thompson. The organist was Calinda Stockhill and the pianist was Chris Woodhead.

Fine weather and good food enabled over 70 people to enjoy the hog roast, held on the vicarage lawn at St John’s Church on Saturday, August 8. Entertaining music to listen or dance to was provided by the local group Taking It Easy, singing songs from the 60s. Proceeds were for church funds. The Rev Cannon Martyn Crompton led the family communion service at St John’s Church, gave the gospel reading and was also the preacher. Anne Crosland led intercession prayers and Ann Norton was the organist. At a welcome service in the afternoon Cannon Martyn baptised Madison Paige Welburn and Rhys Nicholas Mulhall and Toby Oliver Brierley.

LINTHWAITE

The Rev Jo Archer Siddall led the worship at Linthwaite Methodist Church with an enthusiastic look at the Indiana Jones films and the Christian values contained within the stories. Concentrating on the Raiders of the Lost Ark film, the Rev Jo had hidden nine Christian artefacts, including the ‘Holy Grail’ in the Church and the children had great fun searching for them, as well as being able to display their knowledge of the film. The Rev Jo then talked about the Indiana Jones character in the film having to choose the right chalice from a selection. The Bible reading was from Hebrew 13, ‘Living a positive Christian Life.’ Linda Nuttall was the organist and Peter Stead worked the audio visual equipment.

At Christ Church on Saturday the wedding of Samantha Clark and Tim Staples was conducted by the Rev David Wilding, who also led the Sunday morning service, celebrated Holy Communion and gave a blessing. Lessons were read by Sheila Bottomley and Margaret McQuillan. Members of the Mothers Union gave a presentation on the life of Mary Sumner, the founder of the Mothers Union and renewed their promises. The organist was Derek Horn. The evening service was led by Margaret McQuillan who also preached and prayed. Lessons were read by Derek Horn and the organist was Rhona Jepson.
