Church: The Sunday service was taken by Lesley Sullivan who talked to the young people how we are part of God’s army.
She described the armour needed to fight against deceit, lies, unbelief, violence, wickedness and despair. The older congregation were told of endurance and perseverance – what we need to live our lives. The reading from James 5 v 7-11 ‘Patience in Suffering’. Life is hard but we should follow God’s plan for us, not nearly doing it but following it to our best ability. ‘Blessed are those who persevere.’ Next week’s service will be a Worship Service.
Village Hall: A Craft Fair will be held tomorrow (Sunday) from 10am – 5pm.
Hospice Support Group: A coffee morning is being held in the Village Hall today from 10.30am.
CLAYTON WEST
Parish Communion was celebrated at All Saint’s Church, Clayton West at the usual time of 9.15am. The theme of the morning was the Kingship of Christ. Rev Joy Cousans led the service, ably assisted by the readers, Jonathan Newcombe and Joy Lane reading from Psalm 16 and the Gospel of Mark, chapter 13 (vv1-8), respectively.Prayers for the wider world were prepared and delivered by Kath and Brendan McDaid. During communion, the choir led the worship in the singing of O Taste and See by R Vaughan Willams.After the service, coffee was served by Wynn Leake and Jane Stanley.During the service, parishioners presented their toy boxes for the Samaritan’s Purse appeal, entitled Christmas Child.
The morning service at the Methodist Church was led by Jean Heath, who spoke about Daniel and about Jesus reassuring the disciples about the future. The reading from Hebrews was given by Beryl Holt and from Mark by Joan Bond. The organist was Jane Hobson and stewards were Diana Hunt and Joan Bond. The gift of flowers for the communion table was from Mrs Ida Brooke. After the service Maxine Lodge served coffee and biscuits.
Last Tuesday members of the Ladies Fellowship enjoyed a visit to Pennine Garden Centre to see the Christmas decorations and gifts. They also sampled coffee and cakes in the restaurant.
Next Saturday the coffee morning will be held at 10.30 to noon. There will be Christmas gift, Traidcraft and cake stalls. Bacon sandwiches will be on sale.
DENBY DALE
A Christmas tree festival and advent labyrinth will be hosted by churches in Denby Dale from December 4 – 6. The tree festival at Holy Trinity Church will feature different Christmas trees designed and decorated by local schools and clubs. It runs from 10am to 6pm on Dec 4, 11am to 6pm on Dec 5 and 12pm to 4pm on Dec 6. The advent labyrinth at the methodist church will chart the journey to Christmas and runs from 10am to 7pm on Dec 4, 10am to 7pm on Dec 5 and 12pm to 4pm on Dec 6. Info: Mrs Hawkes on 01484 865763.
EMLEY
Worship for All Communion Service at St Michael’s was led and celebrated by the Rev Christine Bullimore on Sunday morning. Evelyn Barrow read the gospel and gave the talk based on Mark 13 which deals with the destruction of the temple, warning the disciples against spiritual dangers. Evelyn questioned whether today’s society believe and trust in God. She urged Christians to share their faith. Paul Renshaw played the organ and coffee was served. Later, Blake Luke Hepplestone, son of Sarah and James; and Jake Christian Firth, son of Rebecca and Shane were baptised. Evening Worship was held at 6pm.
