KIRKBURTON

Pastoral Minister Mr Malcolm Tibbott welcomed worshippers to the service of Sung Eucharist in All Hallows last Sunday. The service was led by the Ven Robert Freeman, Archdeacon of Halifax. Prayers of intercession were led by Mr Tibbott. Mrs Theresa Quarmby gave the readings St Paul’s letter to the Hebrews and the gospel according to St Mark. In his address Mr Freeman took for his theme: Let us ...Ken and Joyce Harris took up the chalice and paten, and curate, the Rev Robert Chambers, and reader, Janet Roberts, assisted Mr Freeman at the distribution. Shirley Lingwood and Pauline Pinder were sidesmen and organised the collection. Refreshments were served by Joanne Smith and Jean Sutcliffe. Doreen Barraclough was organist. In the evening worshippers attended a special multi-media presentation at the Hub What’s so Amazing about Grace based on the book by Philip Yancey. Led by Lorraine Lockwood and supported by Vicky Daniels, the evening used stories, music and pictures to explore and reflect on the extent of God’s Grace.

Members of the Burton Friendship Club met for their weekly meeting at The Hub on Tuesday and held a coffee afternoon to raise money for the Hub. There was a variety of things for sale including books, cakes, mystery parcels and bric-a-brac. The event raised £100 and thanks were expressed to everyone who had contributed to its success.

SHELLEY

Shelley Over 60s held their weekly meeting in the village hall last Thursday.The bingo line was shared by Kathleen Stevenson, Sylvia Stevenson and Vera Wilkinson. The full house was won by Gordon Burgin. The first three numbers on one card was not won and the prize carried over to the next.meeting. The whist high of 90 was won by Kathleen Stevenson, and the low of 60 went to Audrey Taylor from seven tables. Some of our older members enjoyed an exercise class with Pcso Sharon which was greatly appreciated. Members wished a happy birthday” to Margaret Baker, Sam Priest and Joyce Booth and welcomed Elaine Shaw as a new member. Raffle prizes were won by Molly James, Joan Horne, Bessie Usher, Kathleen Proctor, Gordon Burgin Jean Eskrett, Dora Mettrick and Dora Sanders.

SKELMANTHORPE

On Saturday an Autumn Fayre was held at Skelmanthorpe Methodist Church, Pilling Lane. The event was a great success with lots of people enjoying the refreshments and a variety of stalls. Many thanks to the people who provided cakes, refreshments and items for the stalls. Also thanks to those who helped and supported the event on the day.

On Sunday the Rev David Hall of Penistone conducted the service at Skelmanthorpe Methodist Church. The theme of the service was Listening.

On Monday, Skelmanthorpe Wives’ group met to read through the script of their annual pantomime, Dick Whittington, which is to be held in March 2010. The panto is written and will be produced and choreographed by Granville Stead. Granville is the chairman of Longwood Amateur Operatic Society and is also a member of Huddersfield Light Opera Company. Supper was provided by the hosts for the evening, Jean Leach, June Pearson and Eleanor Bond.

A service at Skelmanthorpe Wesleyan Reform Church was taken by Tony Hudson.Mr Hudson read a Bible passage from the book of psalms.
