HADE EDGE

An unusual blessing will, for the second year, take place at Hade Edge Methodist Church on Sunday January 31 at 2.30pm. The Rev Charlotte Lorimer will lead the ‘Blessing of the Plough’ when at least two hand-pulled ploughs, seed drills and other associated implements will be in chapel. Farmers are being invited to come to church on their tractors, with ploughs attached – particularly those members of the farming community who keep the countryside in good order. The origin of Plough Sunday dates back to medieval times when the parish ploughs, bedecked with ribbons, would be dragged to church. Farmers donated candles and gifts at the church altar and by touring with the plough, they hoped the generosity of local folk would cover their outlay. Often, sword dancing would follow the service. The custom died out towards the end of the 19th century. Last year, it was revived and this year, the church is extending the event by providing a ploughman’s tea after the service, with cheese hopefully provided by Wensleydale Creamery and soft cheese and butter from Longley Farm.
