MP Barry Sheerman tours Surestart centres
CHILDREN at the Almondbury and Newsome SureStart Childrens’ Centres were visited by Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman.
It was part of a fact-finding mission to raise awareness of a new Kirklees Council programme.
The ‘Childs Journey – Children Centres Supporting Parents’ project will start in April this year and will aim to give support to new and single parents.
Brenda Liversidge, Almondbury SureStart manager, said: “Mr Sheerman was really good with both the children and the parents.
“He spent more than an hour at the centre and took time to speak to everyone. It was a really positive visit.”
Mr Sheerman also spent time at the Newsome centre where they were running a Winter Wonderland Family Funday. More than 25 parents attended the session.
The politician gave a presentation on the new programme and spent time talking to parents, children and partner agencies.
Each of the centres is open to the public between 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday.
Sessions on offer include Family Support Drop-in, Babies into Books, Healthy Eating on a Budget and Midwifery Drop-ins.
