BROCKHOLES

Parish communion at St George’s Church was celebrated by the Rev David Barnes, who also baptised Christopher John Radley, the son of Clair. Dorothy Coldwell read the lesson and Rosalind Watt was the server. The organist was Verena Wood.

On Saturday, members of the young people’s AD Group organised a coffee morning with a flower theme. Proceeds were shared between the Forget Me Not Trust and church funds.

The May meeting of Brockholes Women’s Institute began with President Zita Crossley asking the members to consider the resolution concerning labelling of raw meat products with country of origin, it was discussed and voted on. This result will be passed to the delegate for the NFWI AGM in June at the Cardiff International Arena. A poem about Senior Citizens resulted in a lively discussion about the members’ childhoods, during the war and arrival of television to ordinary homes. This was followed by a bring-and-buy sale including plants. The meeting closed with a faith supper.

HEPWORTH

The Rev Keith Griffin conducted the parish Eucharist service on Sunday morning at Holy Trinity Church. The reader was Jane Selkirk, and the organist was Jane Selkirk. Chris Fletcher and Rebecca Battye supervised the Sunday School which welcomed two or three new children. During the reading of the notices, the congregation were reminded of the Plant Sale being held in the grounds of The Old Vicarage, Butt Lane today (Saturday) when, between 10am and 2pm, hundreds of plants will be on sale at bargain prices. Refreshments, including hot bacon butties, will be available.

On Tuesday evening, members of the Ladies’ Group enjoyed an evening walk, organised by Cath Windle. The walk was followed by a bar meal at a local hostelry.

The funeral service for Eileen Maw was held in Hepworth Church on Wednesday morning when family and friends gathered to pay their respects. The service was conducted by the Rev Keith Griffin.

Churchwardens Hilary Fletcher and Sheena Blunden attended a service on Wednesday evening at St Peter's Church, Huddersfield when, along with many others, they were sworn in a churchwardens for the coming year.

HOLMBRIDGE

Members of the Holmfirth Camera Club held a training evening on camera basics at their meeting in Holmbridge. The evening was led by Phil Hack and Geoff France.

Holmbridge Women’s Institute held a ‘resolutions’ meeting followed by a quiz chaired by Chris Carpenter.

Midweek Holy Communion at St David’s Church was led by the Rev Geoff Bamford when Ian Gold read the lessons. The Rev Geoff Bamford also officiated at Thursday early morning communion for Ascension Day. Lessons were read by Ian Gold. Friday evening prayers were led by Carolyn Burley.

Meetings of the Monkey Business, Tumble Tots and free lunch and over 60s club were held during the week.

Early communion on Sunday was conducted by the Rev Roger Nelson. It was followed by parish Eucharist celebrated by the Rev Geoff Bamford when lessons were read by Thelma Nelson and Judi Bamford, Intercessions were led by Carolyn Burley and the chalice was administered by Ian Gold. The crèche and junior church were led by Judith Roberts and Joyce Smith. The organist was Eddie Purcell.

HOLMFIRTH

The Seventh Sunday of Easter was celebrated at Holy Trinity with 10.30am Parish Eucharist. The Rev Val Clarke was the celebrant and she was assisted by Brian Shaw with the chalice. Brian also led the Intercessions Elizabeth Sheard read from Acts 16 v16-34. Alan and Vicki Winpenny were sidesmen. Keith and Barbara Jones served coffee after the service.

Last Sunday Holmfirth Methodist Church members joined the congregation of Honley Methodist Church when preacher was Dean Henry Stapleton. Being the first Sunday after Ascension Day, the theme of the service focused on Jesus ascending to heaven forty days after his resurrection. The children had their own teaching and were told the story of how Jesus fed five thousand people with just five loaves and two fishes.

HONLEY

The family service at St Mary's Church was conducted by the Rev David Barnes. Christopher Longden read the lessons and intercessions were led by Diana and Huw Griffiths. Music for the service was provided by the music group and children of Honley Junior School choir, who also performed two individual items under their conductor Mrs Sue Ogden.

Parish Eucharist at St Mary’s Church was led by the Rev David Barnes when Clive Waind read the lesson and the organist was Jean Chadwick.

WILSHAW

Wilshaw Village Institute continues to meet in the village hall on the second Thursday of the month. Having enjoyed a splendid demonstration by Linda Hinchliffe of the growing and cultivation of fuchsia in April, the following month brought the annual May Spring Lunch. A delicious meal, beautifully prepared by Caroline Brown, was followed by an afternoon of delightful music for two guitars, played by Colin and Anne Spence. Mrs M Trayte thanked them such excellent entertainment.

WOOLDALE

Morning worship at the Methodist Church was led by the Rev Charlotte Lorimer. The organist was Nigel Morris. The worshippers were joined by members of Brockholes and Meltham Methodist churches and refreshment were served afterwards.
