Young Huddersfield Town fan Ryan Dearnley will be keeping a low profile at tomorrow’s FA Cup tie against Reading.

Ryan, 11, of Lepton, caused an internet storm last April when he rattled Reading fans on the eve of their cup semi-final against Arsenal.

Town met the Royals at the same stage of the FA Cup 12 months ago and lost 1-0. Ryan, however, had reason to be cheerful after winning a competition at the game to be a semi-final mascot.

Unfortunately, Town’s conquerors Reading reached the semis and Ryan was to be their mascot.

And when a video clip of Ryan saying he hoped Arsenal would win appeared on the Examiner’s website, Reading fans saw red.

The Football Association dropped him for the semi but gave him a mascot role at England’s Euro qualifier against Estonia last October instead.

Ryan will be back at the John Smith’s Stadium tomorrow with uncle Neil Dearnley and grandad Alan has told him to button it.

“Ryan’s really looking forward to the game but I’ve told him to be on his best behaviour,” said Alan, 63. “We don’t want to rile anybody this time.”

Ryan will be steering clear of any similar competitions this time around but loved his 15 minutes of fame.

“Just Google him and there’s pages about him,” said Alan. “He’s more famous than me. I think I’ve only got one mention!”

Ryan had been due to be the mascot for Estonia but the England mascot dropped out at the last minute and Ryan stepped in.

His cousin Charlie McDonnell, nine, had also travelled to Wembley to watch but ended up walking out with Estonia.

Ryan wore a blue Respect T-shirt which he got to keep but the England shirt he was sent later was too small!

The controversy struck a chord with Town skipper Mark Hudson who presented him with a signed shirt after the 4-4 draw with Derby, played on the day of the ill-fated cup semi-final.

Alan said: “It was all good fun and worked out well for Ryan in the end.”

No offence to Reading fans but Ryan thinks Town will win 2-1!
