Huddersfield Town fan James Robinson proved himself an expert on Town history when he appeared on TV’s Mastermind last night .

James, 25, of Mirfield, was bang in contention at half-time after the specialist subject round.

But quizmaster John Humphrys then delivered some tough general knowledge questions – and James finished last of the four contestants.

Admin assistant James, a Town fan since he was seven, had all the club’s facts and figures buzzing round in his brain and got 11 out of 14 on his specialist subject.

There were only three Town posers that left him stumped.

James said: “It was a great experience, very exciting and not for the faint-hearted.

“Mastermind has a reputation as one of the toughest quizzes on TV but it wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be.

“You have to be confident in your ability to at least have a go.”

James is no stranger to TV quiz shows having appeared on Countdown twice, Pointless and Breakaway.

“There was a good range of questions but most of them were from older times and not so recent,” said James.

“I did anticipate one of the questions about the formation of the club so I was happy with that.”

James finished on 18 points with the winner – and the second – both amassing 26 points.

“It was very close after the specialist subject round but I was unlucky with the general knowledge questions I got.

“I could answer the ones given to other competitors!”

James hasn’t been put off quiz shows and now plans to try again for The Chase.

“I had an audition in 2011 and was on the shortlist for 16 months without getting on,” he said.

The three Town questions that James couldn’t answer :

1: In which ground did Town play their 1922 FA Cup semi-final against Notts County?

2: Which team relegated Town in 1951-52?

3: In 1975, who became the first player to win the Hargreaves Memorial Trophy (Player of the Year)?
