Hospital chiefs are appealing for name suggestions for a revamped community cafe.

Holme Valley Memorial Hospital has relaunched its cafe, which has been run for many years by volunteers from the League of Friends.

The cafe has never had a formal name and now Locala Community Parternships, who operate the site, have asked for ideas.

As part of the revamp, Locala has dug out a selection of historic items to display on the walls.

Memorabilia such as photographs and brass plaques stating who had paid for a particular bed – most of which have been unseen by the public for decades – have been brought out of storage.

A spokeswoman for the group of colleagues who have been actively involved in the plans for the new-look caf, said: “This building was originally a private house called Elmwood and it became a hospital in 1920 to provide care for injured soldiers returning from the First World War.

“When we were thinking about a name we agreed we wanted it to reflect something of this history.

“We also know that the hospital it very dear to the hearts of a lot of people in the Holme Valley, particularly as many were born here.

“Others have either received care here or have close relatives who have been or are patients.

“That’s why we would like local people to share their thoughts on a name.”

With the new decor highlighting and complementing the building’s original architectural features the cafe will offer an extended eat in/take away menu and longer opening hours in gracious surroundings.

Besides the two cafe rooms, a third room and a disused conservatory have also been refurbished and are available for local groups to use.

The new caf will be open 8.30am to 3pm, Monday to Friday, serving hot and cold drinks, sandwiches and snacks.

A customer loyalty scheme will be offered. Please send name ideas to Amanda.thomas@locala.org.uk or call in at the cafe and leave your suggestion there.

The closing date is Tuesday, December 17.

The chosen name will be announced before Christmas and there will be an official opening in the New Year.
