Another town centre eyesore in Huddersfield is to be transformed into student flats.

Oldgate House, once used by Kirklees Council to house its education services, is the latest abandoned building to be revamped as bedsits for the university.


Work on the huge £11m refurbishment has started.


The nine-storey premises behind the Kingsgate Centre have been empty since the council moved out in 2009.

Two men, one armed with a knife, tried to rob a man in Dalton.

Police say the incident occurred in Standiforth Lane at 12.30pm on Sunday, January 31, as the victim walked along the road.


They grabbed his bag but the victim pulled it back.


One of the men then produced a knife and the victim, still clinging on to his bag, fled.

If anyone is travelling home from Manchester, there is very slow traffic on the M62 eastbound due to an earlier broken down vehicle between J19 (Heywood) and J20 (Rochdale). All lanes have re-opened but still very slow.

About 100 staff were evacuated last night from paint and coatings company PPG on Huddersfield Road, Birstall following an ammonia leak.

Cleckheaton fire crew commander Adrian Murphy said the incident was reported to them at 9.15pm.

Sadly, Lorraine who has been at the pub in various capacities over more than two decades, is having to give up her position as licencee due to ill health.


Gary Guy, who owns The Albert, just a few yards away, will be running the pub as a Tenant at Will. His new regime starts on Monday.


The popular pub is owned by Enterprise Inns and is famed for its inexpensive lunches for pensioners.

Huddersfield’s victorious chess team celebrate after winning the Bill Lumley Rapidplay trophy at West Bretton Village Hall last night.

The team had already won three matches out of three but needed to beat West Bretton and David Browns to be sure of the trophy.


They survived a nerve-wracking first match against West Bretton and then demolished David Browns to end up with five out of five.

Police are appealing for information after a car was stolen from a house in Ripponden.


Between 11pm of Monday, 8 February and 5.30am the following day a black Land Rover Defender was stolen from a property.

The Land Rover has a distinctive Hannibal roof rack (the name is on the rear) and also a small dint on the near side front wing. A white van, acting suspiciously was seen around the location on the same day.


PC Lisa McDonald said: “This vehicle has very distinctive features including a Hannibal roof rack and we would like to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious during that evening or have seen the vehicle since to help with our enquiries.”
