A man from Huddersfield was apparently thrown into the Marseille harbour during violent scenes involving rival football supporters in the French city.

Tom Scandling, a Huddersfield Town fan from from Meltham, was pictured being punched and kicked to the ground and later appeared to have a black eye as he swam back to the harbour shore on Friday.

Mr Scandling's mother Corrine Scandling took to social media to defend her son, saying he wasn't a trouble maker.

Mrs Scandling responded to a post, on Twitter, which showed a photo of her son in the harbour with the comment: "Reckon this England fan's had better days."

She replied: "None of you know him and are just seeing what you want. For your information he isn't a thug, hooligan but my son. He only got there yesterday."

Mrs Scandling said she had spoken to her son after the incident and that he was "fine".

She said it wasn't clear who had thrown him into the harbour, adding: "Not sure, he didn't say. Getting mixed messages from various sources. French or Russian (fans)."

Mrs Scandling declined to speak to the Huddersfield Examiner.

Her was not available to comment.

Other Huddersfield Town fans took to Twitter to joke that the photo of Mr Scandling in the harbour had "gone viral".

One said: "Whatever England do at the euros it'll always be remembered as the one where @scandling got lobbed int harbour."

The clean-up of Marseille was under way today following the widespread disorder.

Disturbing footage of the second night of trouble showed English fans pelting objects into the street, showering the police with bottles and throwing chairs out of cafes.

Flares were also lit as officers deployed tear gas in an effort to disperse the troublemakers throughout the day.

Reacting to the violence, shadow home secretary Andy Burnham tweeted: "When you think of the terror threat & everything the French are dealing with, makes behaviour of these England 'fans' even more embarrassing."

He said: "As ever, vast majority let down by a minority."

Bare-chested England fans sang songs about the IRA and German bombers being shot down as violence first broke out on Friday at around 6.20pm French time outside the Queen Victoria pub in the Old Port district.

Fist fights broke out between English, French and Russian-speaking men, and one man - later identified as Tom Scandling - was thrown into the harbour after he was beaten to the ground.

It comes before the England team have even kicked a ball in the tournament, with their opening game against Russia to be played at the city's Stade Velodrome.

This followed an England supporter suffering a head injury in Thursday night's brawl after being hit across the face with a wooden chair.
