An off-licence could lose its right to sell alcohol after allegedly selling it outside of permitted hours.

West Yorkshire Police have called a review of the Jerath Off-Licence at Trinity Street after a tip-off led to three test stings.

Over the summer police received information that Jerath was selling alcohol outside of the hours authorised on its premises licence.

They are allowed to sell alcohol Monday to Saturday from 8am until 11pm and Sunday from 10am until 11pm.

Three separate test purchase operations took place and alcoholic drinks were sold to police officers outside of authorised hours on each occasion.

Pc Richard Farrand, in a statement in council papers, said the sale of alcohol in the early hours of the morning was “contributing to an increase in early morning alcohol related anti-social behaviour on Water Street, Springwood.”

It’s claimed that during the first test purchase on August 11, an undercover police officer visited at 8.30am on a Sunday morning and bought a can of lager.

The following Sunday, at 8.52am, a PCSO in plain clothes bought two cans of lager.

Then on Thursday August 22 at 7.31am, Richard Woodhead, a police licensing officer, was sold cider, again outside of authorised hours.

It is the second review of the premises licence. In February 2011 the store was found to be selling non-duty-paid alcohol. They had the licence suspended for one month by Kirklees Licensing.

Councillors on the Licensing Panel will consider the premises licence review on Monday at 10.30am at Huddersfield Town Hall.
