They had that top of the world feeling at Queensgate.

The University of Huddersfield, newly-proclaimed University of the Year by a major periodical, has held the topping-out ceremony for its latest building, a
£22.5m Learning and Leisure Centre.

But it was a ceremony with a difference. Instead of a brick or wooden beam being inserted – which is traditional at a topping-out – the final sedum plant was laid on to the green roof of the building alongside many others.

Three people were invited to do the honours – Colin Blair, who is director of Estates and Facilities at the university, plus the deputy director, Alan Johnson and the President of the University of Huddersfield Students’ Union, Nosheen Dad.

University vice-chancellor Prof Bob Cryan said: “This is an innovative building and it is therefore appropriate that we have an innovative topping-out.”

The Learning and Leisure Centre will offer massive improvements in sports and catering facilities.

The new buildings will replace the old sports hall which stands at the corner of the Queensgate campus.
