Miner's strike 1984
Miner's strike 1984

Home Secretary Amber Rudd has ruled out an inquiry into the so-called Battle of Orgreave in 1984.

Miners and police clashed at the Yorkshire coking plant during the Miners’ Strike.

Campaigners claimed that officers led by South Yorkshire Police were heavy-handed and manufactured statements.

Mrs Rudd said she did not believe there was “sufficient basis...to instigate either a statutory inquiry or an independent review”.

Shadow home secretary Diane Abbott described the decision as a “grave injustice”. Andy Burnham MP called it an “establishment stitch-up”.

Jo Cox's widower speaks for first time of family's grief

The bereaved husband of late MP Jo Cox has spoken for the first time on the family’s grief following her murder.

Talking to Andrew Marr on the Marr Show yesterday, Brendan Cox said his children had asked “why someone would do that” after Jo was shot and stabbed outside Birstall library in June.

He said, following the reaction from the public, their son Cuillin had said: “I knew lots of people loved Mummy but I didn’t realise this many did.”

On yesterday’s show, Mr Marr called Jo’s murder “one of the worst things to happen in British politics in my lifetime”.

A spokesperson said: “There are traffic problems in the surrounding area as a result of the incident.”
