A SUPERMARKET in Brackenhall is relaunching its community project to help local people.

Asda supermarket, off Bradford Road, is set to reignite the community spirit in Huddersfield with a series of initiatives including the chance to nominate a community group to win a £250 cash donation.

Leading the scheme in Huddersfield as Asda’s new Community Colleagues are Judith Alderman and Anne Hodkin.

Both women have worked tirelessly in the community and have good local contacts to help kick-start the initiative.

Judith Alderman told the Examiner: "This is a chance for schools, churches, charities and individuals to show the fantastic work they do in the community.

"It is about everyone, both young and old, coming together to achieve a better community."

The project will be officially launched nationwide on March 26.

A new community noticeboard has been put up in store with all the details about the forthcoming initiative.

Next month voting will start for the first ‘Chosen By You’ awards.

Shoppers will receive a free token when they go in store and can then vote for the charity which they believe is most worthy of a £250 cash donation, with two runners up receiving £50 each.

The first three charities which have been chosen are The Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust and national charity Tinkled Pink.

The ‘Chosen By You’ awards will run every other month.

The store is also inviting local community groups and non-for- profit groups free use of their meeting room and training room at available pre-booked slots.

School children are also going to be invited in store for a talk on healthy eating.

Brackenhall Asda Store Manager Phil Kenyon added: "It’s really good we are going to be reigniting our project to play a more active and positive role in our community.

"We want to understand the issues that are affecting those within the surrounding area of the store and will be working with our MP and local community leaders to see where it is best to focus or efforts."

Speaking of why Asda’s previous project lapsed five years ago, he added: "We have new leadership and there has been a realisation that it all about building trust.

"By working with the community we engage and trust in our customers. We all live and work here and now Asda is in a position to be able to make a positive impact."
