Ashbrow roads could be regenerated with a £96,700 cash injection.

Residents regularly raise concerns regarding the poor state of the road surface in Bradley, Fartown and Deighton.

And now Ashbrow Ward councilors have applied for an additional £26,600 which could be added to existing budget of £70,000 to undertake Streetscene improvements in the area.

The money is to be spent on resurfacing, reconstructing roads, improving traffic signals, maintenance and improving footpaths.

Money will also be spent on tackling congestion.

And the funds have already been allocated on top of the repairs announced in Deighton Road, Woodhouse Hill at Fartown in May as part of the authority’s two year plan to spend £3.4m a year on local highway issues.

Ashbrow Clr Ken Smith said: “We are always desperate for roads repairs. We have a long list of roads where the road surface has worn away.

“Take Bradley for instance. The estate is the largest council estate in Kirklees built in the 1950s. It is no surprise that the roads are all in need repair at the same time.

“We have also seen other areas such as Redwood Drive, Bradley.

“Here it is a new 1990s estate but due to the road layout Redwood Drive has taken the brunt of constant use because it is the sole access road to the estate.

“But I would say the worst street in the ward is Wilton Avenue, Bradley.

“There are deep pot holes and I suspect the road surface has collapsed.”

Ashbrow Ward councillors previously agreed for a similar programme of works to be funded from their devolved area committee and ward budgets.

It will be decided tonight at Huddersfield Area Committee whether the additional £26,600 will be allocated.
