A TEDDY bear mascot has been created for Holmfirth and the Holme Valley.

Battye Bear is a Yorkshire teddy bear who wears a flat cap and scarf and sports the Holmfirth name on his paw.

The bear is the brainchild of Richard and Loretta Skelton, owners of Ash House Bed and Breakfast in the town.

Richard said: “We think having a town mascot will add something extra to Holmfirth and the events that take place here.

“Battye will act as an ambassador for the area, publicising all we have to offer in a light-hearted way.”

As well as producing the soft toy, the couple are developing a story and character around him.

Battye is already blogging about his adventures on his own website at www.battyebear.co.uk and he has Facebook and Twitter accounts.

To mark his arrival, children will be invited to enter a colouring competition during the school Summer holidays for a chance to win their own Battye Bear, along with other prizes.

Entry forms will be available from Holmfirth Tourist Information Centre, along with free Battye stickers and bookmarks.
