ONE burglary is one too much but crime would only cease in a state of complete utopia.

The burglary rate continues to fall but there were still 3,235 house burglaries in Kirklees in three years – and that amounts to an awful lot of personal heartache.

We revealed last week that the burglary rate in West Yorkshire is significantly higher than the national average.

The burglars would have us believe it is a victimless crime as they break in just to steal property such as jewellery, cash and electrical items.

But it’s a far from victimless offence. Even if people are not at home when the crime is committed it can destroy their peace of mind and feeling of security.

It can leave them greatly distressed knowing someone has invaded the privacy of their home and, in the worst cases, victims struggle to continue living at the same house and often that can be somewhere they have lived for decades, leaving behind a home filled with precious memories.

On top of that, anything the thieves may have stolen could be of great sentimental value and completely irreplaceable.

Burglary is a sickening crime for the victims and it’s absolutely right it remains a police and Kirklees Council priority no matter how deep the budget cuts bite.
