A Remembrance Service will be held on the Coronation Gardens from 10.45am on Tuesday November 11. Meet at Birdsedge Church from 10.30am. Refreshments will be available back at the church, after the service.

Matt Wright led Sunday morning service in Birdsedge Church. He talked to the children about how the Passover started. When the children had gone out into the Sunday school the adults went into the meaning of Passover in more detail. Tom Wood took the Communion part of the service.

Each year the church has had a Christmas Giving for various organisations. This year items for use in First Aid boxes will be collected. Donations of cotton wool, plasters, sanitary products, bandages, antiseptic cream, ointments and non prescription drugs along with old bits or new candles can be left at the church or with any church member and gratefully received.

A coffee morning to be held in the Church school room today Saturday November 8 will be the first time that next year’s calendar will be on sale along with Birdsedge Christmas cards. The Hospice support group will also have a stall selling Christmas cards.

CLAYTON WEST

The monthly coffee morning was held at All Saints’ Church on Saturday. It was sponsored by members of the church, attracting a large number of people.

Sunday saw the Parish Eucharist celebrated by a welcome visitor – Rev Roger Nelson, from Holme. A new piece of music was sung by the choir – From The Highest Of Heights by Laura Story. Organist and keyboard players were Jonathan Newcombe and Gillian Hamer. Coffee was served after the service by church members.

Last Tuesday 'Churches Together' held the holiday club at the Methodist Church. Forty six children enjoyed learning about St Francis and St Bernadette, in the stories told by Joan Harvey. Craft work was done in groups, games and activitiews took place. The day ended with songs and prayers in the church –a very happy time for for everyone.

Sunday morning worship at the Methodist church was led by a local preacher, Peter Holt, a member of the church. He spoke about humility and all being equal in God's eyes. Wendy Barber read a lesson and stewards were Joan Bond and Diana Hunt. Coffee and cakes were enjoyed after the service.

COWCLIFFE

The Sunday service was held at St Hilda’s Church. The Big Breakfast Club children helped Rev Helen Hodgson with their music and singing at the All Age Worship. The theme for the day ‘New Beginnings’ was a celebration of St Hilda’s and her sister church St Francis of Fixby joining together. Members of the congregation wrote their prayers and lit candles at the rear of the church in remembrance of loved ones and also to pray for new beginnings.

DENBY DALE

Zion Wesleyan Reform Chapel Sunday School enjoyed a half term outing to the Kirklees Light Railway last Wednesday and on Sunday morning began preparations for Christmas when they started rehearsals for the Nativity play.

On Sunday evening the preacher was Rodney Mee from Lepton who spoke about the Beatitudes. This Sunday at 6pm a Sankey Evening will be held with the David Hambleton Singers.

Beryl Holt of Clayton West led worship at the Methodist Church last week. Readings were by Jeanette Lodge and Tony Ward who also played the organ. Stewards were Jeanette Lodge and Ann Dunn. Irene Richardson served coffee.

Tomorrow, a service of Remembrance will be held for Churches Together in the Denby Dale area at Holy Trinity Church, commencing at 9.30am, when Rev David Priestnall will preach, followed at 10.50 by a short service at the war memorial, which Rev David Priestnall will lead.

EMLEY

Sunday morning Worship for All with baptism at St Michael’s Church was led by the Rev John Marsh. Mavis Jessop read the bible and Malcolm Jessop played the organ. Reverend Chris Bullimore gave the talk based on the journey of life suggesting we as Christians need to help newly baptised members on that journey. Charles, son of Claire and Richard Price was baptised by Great Aunt Reverend Chris. Evelyn Barrow led prayers with help and participation from the children. Holy Communion was held in the evening.

Next Sunday morning Holy Communion Service will be held at 9.45am and a service at the War Memorial at 10.45am. In the evening a Memorial Service will be held at 6pm remembering those who have recently died.

On Friday November 14 at 7.30pm, John Woodhead will give a lively talk on firework making in Huddersfield since 1850. Tickets are £3 including refreshments or pay at the door. All welcome.

KIRKBURTON

There were two services in All Hallows Parish Church on the fourth Sunday before Advent. Geoff Slater welcomed worshippers to the morning service of Sung Eucharist for All Saints Day.It was led by the Rev Robert Chambers and pastoral minister, Betty Cross led the prayers of intercession. Hilary Berry gave the reading for the day from the Revelation of St John the Divine. Lay Reader, Janet Roberts read the Gospel from St Matthew and preached the sermon taking for her theme,Š All Saints.ŠShe said that saints were ordinary people who did extraordinary things. During the service Malcolm Tibbott was authorised as a Pastoral Lay Minister. Mr Chambers invited the two exiting pastoral ministers, Mrs Cross and his wife, Mary, as well as his tutor group to support him as he committed himself to work for Christ in Pastoral ministry in the parish.Š He wasŠ presentedŠ with a badge and a certificate, and Mr Chambers gave him a BibleŠ from the church family. Grace Daniels and Peter Phillips took up the chalice and paten and, at the distribution, Mr Chambers was assisted by Mrs Roberts and pastoral minister, Mr Tibbott. Rita Ellam and Gail Marshall performed the duties of sidesmen and took up the collection.

Next week will be Remembrance Day and during the service Mr Chambers called-up the children of the Sunday Club to show a special banner they had made with the words “Remember Them” surrounded by poppies and he asked them to talk about it and say what the poppies represented. Doreen Barraclough wasŠ the organist.ŠAfter the service members of the congregation were invited to stay and enjoy refreshments served by Margaret Haigh and Edith Brookes.

In the evening Mr Chambers led the service of Evensong. Again the theme was All Saints and there were meditations about the Saints interspersed with readings by Mike Steele, Dorothy Greenwood, Shirley Lingwood and Betty Cross.

Members of the Burton Friendship Club met for their weekly meeting at The Hub and each brought along something they had made.There were a variety of things including crochet knitting, embroidery, painting and tapestry which were put on display. Sandra Spivey thanked them all for taking part. The raffle was won by Mrs M CalvertŠ and refreshments were served by Mesdames Vera Spivey and Heeley.

SHELLEY

Shelley Over 60s opened their meeting at the Methodist Hall on October 30 with a presentation to Howard Crowther for his services to the village in 23 years at the Post Office. Whilst most members played their usual games of whist and dominoes, others took part in the annual duckball race on the local ‘stream’. The winning duckball went to Jean Porter, second prize went to Arthur Pollard and third prize to Edith Brookes. A minute’s silence was held in memory of Joyce Armitage who passed away earlier in the week.

Shelley Emmanuel Church will host a concert by Skelmanthorpe Male Voice Choir, supported by Roger Brae (Yorkshire dialect) on Friday November 14 at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced £7 and include a glass of wine and nibbles. They are available from church members, Lydgate Styles of the Spar Shop.

Shelley Art Group will hold their annual exhibition in the village hall on Sunday November 23 (10am-4pm). Members will exhibit a range of work, including watercolours, acrylics, oils and pastels. Some items will be be for sale and commissions will be accepted. Refreshments are available and parking is available in the village hall car park. More information from Richard Walker on 606192.

SKELMANTHORPE

The 10 Villages Conservation Group will be doing clearance work at Skelmanthorpe Youth and Community Centre on Saturday, November 15. Volunteers should meet at the Council Offices at 10am for the short walk to the centre nearby. Anyone interested in joining in should contact Countryside Officer Andy Wickham on 222960.
