Pupils from Birkby Junior School swapped their notebooks for microscopes to checkout the fascinating world of forensic science.

The youngsters were kitted out with forensic white suits before sealing off the crime scene to preserve the evidence.

Their real-life scenario crime scene was based around the Great Train Robbery.

Students learned how the robbers got away with over £2.6 million (the equivalent of £46 million today) in what has since become an infamous crime.

Assistant Headteacher Simon Smith said: “It’s been a fantastic day.

“With it being 50 years since The Great Train Robbery we used that as the scenario for the children to base their crime scene around.

“We had them checking for clues by dusting for finger prints at the scene which had been sealed off with yellow crime scene tape.

“We also looked at dentistry records because apparently one of the clues at the scene was an apple core with teeth marks.

“Pupils had a go at casting and taking imprints.”

The crime scene was visited by all Year 5 and Year 6 pupils as a fun and educational initiative before the half term break.
