SCHOOLCHILDREN, police and charity representatives helped Asda’s Community Awards launch get off to a flying start.

The initiative, revived after a five-year lapse, will see charities and community groups chosen to be eligible for grants every second month.

The Asda supermarket, off Bradford Road, Brackenhall, has appointed Judith Alderman and Anne Hodkin to help kick-start the initiative.

A new community noticeboard has been put up in store with all the details about the forthcoming project ‘Chosen By You’.

The official launch took place last Monday and Ashbrow Neighbourhood police Inspector Mohammed Rauf and PCSO Rhiannon Sykes found time in their busy schedule to cut the ribbon.

They were helped in their task by eager pupils from Fixby Junior and Infant School and Birkby Junior School.

Shoppers will now receive a free token when shopping in store which they can then vote for the charity which they believe is most worthy of a £200 cash donation, with two runners up receiving £50 each.

The first three charities which have been put forward are The Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust and The Brian Jackson Foundation.

National charity Tickled Pink will also be supported by the supermarket.

The ‘Chosen By You’ awards will run every other month.

The store is also inviting local community groups and not-for-profit groups free use of their meeting room and training room at available pre-booked slots.

Schoolchildren are also going to be invited in store for a talk on healthy eating.
