A STUDENT has been named automotive apprentice of the year.

Andrew Mead, of Brighouse, is a trainee technician and has been named as the Halfords Autocentres’ Apprentice of the Year.

The former Rastrick High School pupil took first place in the annual competition and was praised as a prime example of the quality of young talent joining the automotive repair and maintenance industry.

He was nominated by the manager of the Halfords Autocentre in Huddersfield, where he works.

Halfords Autocentres operations director Simon Benson said: “Andrew is a thoroughly deserving winner given that the calibre of apprentices improves every year, which makes it a very exciting and hard fought competition.”

He won following a day of challenges ranging from safety inspections to problem solving.

On receiving his prize Andrew commented: “Winning feels brilliant.

“It was mentally tough because the different scenarios you’re put through are designed to test the knowledge and skills you’ve gained during three years of study towards your NVQ.”
