PLANS to build a skate park in Meltham have received the thumbs-up from the village’s skateboarders and scooter riders.

And the first stones for Broadlands Community Skatepark could be laid at Broadlands Rec, off Mean Lane, next month.

Skateboarders and rollerbladers together with BMX and scooter riders had their final say on plans at Meltham Fire Station, on Wednesday .

The project has been led and funded by Friends of Meltham Greenway which has raised 100,000 for the first phase of the project.

The facility, designed by bespoke skate park builder Wheelscape, of Bristol, will include ramps and platforms as well as rails and ledges for skaters and riders to slide down.

The Friends, which have successfully piloted the first phase through planning regulations, hope to raise 20,000 for floodlights to allow use until 9.30pm.

The group also intends to raise a further 50,000 for a skate park extension, which it is hoped will open in 2014.

Friends secretary Melvyn Gibson said: “Naturally we’re delighted that within a few weeks the youngsters of Meltham will have a superb facility.

“At the same time we want to acknowledge the generosity of all the sponsors who have contributed to the project by tremendous support as well as those who have given the financial backing.

“It has been a long journey but we, as well as the young people of Meltham, look forward to the opening day.

Mr Gibson added: “The kids have decided. It’s their skate park and it will be free to use.”
