Family communion at St George’s Church on Mothering Sunday was celebrated by the Rev David Barnes. Helen Dickinson read the lesson and Elizabeth Mosley was the server. Verena Wood played the organ. Daffodils donated by Judi Gibbons were given to the ladies by the children. Wine, fruit juice and nibbles prepared by Jane Kenworthy were served.

A social evening was held at which a slideshow entitled Allebridean Journey was presented by Melvyn Gibson. Refreshments on a Scottish theme - soup, bread, tea and shortbread were served. The event raised £125 for church funds.

A Mother’s Day service at the Methodist Church was led by Mrs Marina Woodhead. The fourth symbol was laid on the Lent Cross. Lessons were read by Mrs Eileen Littlewood and Mrs Jan Gaunt. The organist was Mr Keith Garside. Flowers were presented to the congregation.

HELME

Mothering Sunday Family Service at Christ Church, incorporating baptism, was taken by Rev Dennis Shields who gave a welcome and spoke to the children. The lesson was read by Moira Miller and Barbara Brabiner offered prayers of intercession. The children distributed flowers to the congregation. Organist was Lynne Blackburn. Refreshments were served after the service in the community area and simnel cake, baked by Mildred Peace, was distributed.

HEPWORTH

Children were the star attraction at Hepworth Church at the Mothering Sunday service led by the Rev Keith Griffin. Under the supervision of Chris Fletcher and in full view of the congregation, they decorated pots and planted small flowers in the pots, as presents for their mums. Prayers were led by Jane Selkirk and organist was Jane Robertson. Towards the end of the service, the children handed out small bunches of flowers, created by Sally Hampshire, to all the ladies in the congregation.

HOLMBRIDGE

Holmbridge WI members have organised a fashion evening in the parish hall on Tuesday March 11 at 7.30pm. Labels from Huddersfield and Wakefield will be showcasing the latest styles and designs and WI members will act as models. All welcome. Tickets are £3.50, which includes a glass of wine. The Camera Club held a low light projected image competition, which was won by Victor Harris. He also took second place. Geoff France and Peter Bartlett were joint third.

A meeting of Three’s Company, offering entertainment and light refreshments for the elderly, was organised by Carolyn Burley.

The Women’s Institute village show committee meeting was chaired by Barbara Newman.

Meetings of the Over 60s Club, Monkey Business and Tumble Tots were held during the week.

Sunday parish eucharist for Mothering Sunday at St David’s Church was conducted by the Rev Roger Nelson. Helen Wood read the lesson and Carolyn Burley led intercessions. The chalice was administered by the Rev Geoff Bamford. Crèche and junior church were led by Bern and Helen Cooper. Eddie Purcell was the organist.

Evensong was led by Martin Woodhead. Ian Gold read the lessons and the pianist was Audrey Brook.

HOLMFIRTH

Holmfirth Christian Centre’s Sunday morning service at the Phoenix Centre began with praise and worship led by Elijoy and the band. Pastor Ian Gooch led a Mothers Day prayer of appreciation of all the ladies in the church and then handed around chocolates. Carol Paxman spoke on In God’s Hands. Caroline Godwin taught the children in Sunday school about respecting their parents and also helped them make gifts and cards for Mothers Day.

Wednesday evening’s mid-week meeting was again spent learning more about the church or studying the Bible book of James. Refreshments and fellowship followed.

Mothering Sunday was celebrated at Holy Trinity with a family service, when Elizabeth Sheard read from Isaiah. During the service the Mothers' Union leader Audrey Dalton enrolled new member Joy Robert. Rev Keith Griffin spoke on how your mother was remembered. Members of the congregation were asked to give thoughts of their mothers. The reason we now have Mothering Sunday is due to girls in service going back home to see their mothers, but we can also say that God nurtures us as our mothers do. We also call the church Mother Church, he said. Keith and Barbara Jones and family served coffee after the service.

This Sunday there will be Parish Eucharist at 10.30 followed by the Annual Parish Church Meeting.

Holmfirth Air Cadets meet every Monday and Friday (7-9.30pm) at the Cadet Centre, Huddersfield Road in Thongsbridge. Cadets, aged between 13 and 18 are welcome to attand by this uniformed youth organisation. It is sponsored by the Royal Air Force.

HONLEY

A family service for Mothering Sunday at St Mary’s Church was led by the Rev David Barnes. Lessons were read by Helen Martin. Anne and Godfrey Blount led intercessions. A Simnel cake baked by Denise Radcliffer was blessed and enjoyed with coffee after the service. All the ladies were presented with posies of flowers.

On Sunday evening, the Rev David Barnes celebrated parish eucharist. John Ambler read the lesson and the organist for the day was Jean Chadwick.

The Transforming Loves Study Group met in the parish room and was led by Anne Blount.

A Lent lunch was served by the Ladies of St Mary’s Trinity and Elim Churches on Thursday in the parish room.

MELTHAM

Meltham Parish Church Gilbert and Sullivan Society held their 45th AGM in the church hall, with Duncan Crawshaw in the chair. Secretary Ruth Jackson read the minutes and a resumé of the year. Treasurer Becky Gregson-Flynn presented the accounts and thanked auditor David Lace. In a successful year, donations had been given to the church hall (£1,800) and church council (£2,000).

On Saturday, the St. Bartholomew’s Women’s Fellowship held a coffee morning, including tombola, raffle and cakes and £300 was raised for funds. Thanks to all helpers and supporters.

Sunday morning Mothering Sunday service at St Bartholomew’s was taken by layreader Mary Crawshaw who gave a welcome. Children brought trays of flowers to be placed on the altar. Tom Thorley and Susan Crowther read a story about Moses and Samuel The lesson was read by Barbara Sheard. Mary asked the children to say a big thank you to their mums and they were given a certificate to give to their mums. She spoke about How My children Saw Me. Prayers were offered by Sylvia Tancock. The children handed out daffodils to the congregation. Organist was Simon Ball.

MELTHAM MILLS

Sunday morning worship for Mothering Sunday at St James’ Church was taken by layreader Chris Ryan. Mandy Aspland spoke on The Healing of the Blind Man and prayers were offered by Mary Storey. Lessons were read by churchwarden Patrice Curtis, Elizabeth Leach, Mandy Aspland and children. Steve Aspland led the congregation in song and flowers were distributed to the congregation. Refreshments were served afterwards.

NETHERTHONG

The Rev Roger Nelson led family eucharist for Mothering Sunday at All Saints Church. He was assisted by Yvonne Hutson. The Old Testament reading was given by Nicky Green. Richard Green was the organist. Daffodils were distributed to the congregation by Yvonne Hutson and Chris Whitehead. Refreshments followed in the parish room.

Netherthong Senior Citizen’s Club met in the church rooms for games of whist and dominoes and refreshments served by committee members.

NEW MILL

New Mill Good Companions held their 57th birthday party in Lydgate School rooms on Tuesday March 4. Whist and dominos were played and prizes were won by Mrs V Stokes, Mrs R Booth, Mrs C Goldring, and Mrs L Wilson. Raffle prizes were won by Mrs M Whitman, Mrs M Robuck, Mrs P Hellawell and Mrs V Stokes. A tea which was provided by the committee was enjoyed by all.

UPPERTHONG

Members of St John’s and All Saints Mothers Union held a monthly meeting at Upperthong. The speaker was Les Hopkins, whop spoke about films and music. Supper was served after the meeting.

Midweek communion at St John’s Church was led by the Rev Geoff Banks, who was also the celebrant. A faith lunch was held in the meeting room.

Rick Brown assisted with the chalice and Adam Greenhalgh was the organist. Diana Sockford led the monthly Sunday School and children presented daffodils to the congregation. Refreshments were served following the service.

WILSHAW

Theme of Mothering Sunday service at St Mary’s was Rainbow Mums. Masie Taylor and Miles Taylor gave readings and the service was taken by the Rev Judy Kenworthy, who gave the address. Montina Shepherd dressed as a rainbow and Masie and Rebecca Lockley carried the flowers and helped to distribute them to the congregation. Organist was churchwarden Clive Pearson and Elizabeth Pearson led the music group.

WOOLDALE

The Mother’s Day and family services at the Methodist Church were led by Barbara Rochester. Nigel Morris played the organ. The evening service was led by Brian Williams.
