GOOD friends are hard to find – but not in Mirfield.

Because at the weekend pals came together to pound the pavements to raise money for a sick friend.

The group of Castle Hall students and teachers walked all the way from their school on Crowlees Road in Mirfield to the Galpharm Stadium in time for Town’s match against Rochdale.

The sponsored walk was to raise money for Castle Hall schoolgirl Bailey Coppack who is battling a brain tumour and needs specialist proton therapy treatment.

Before setting off, teacher Stephen Walker told the Examiner: “All the pupils have been brilliant and they’ve been so supportive, it’s fantastic really.

“It was Bailey’s family’s idea to do this and we thought it was a nice idea for the school to get involved with.

“We are walking from the school to the Galpharm using the route of the canal.

“The children have bought discounted tickets for the match and they have got sponsorship from friends and family for the walk.

“One year 7 girl has already raised £75 which is just great.”

Bailey couldn’t join her friends in the challenge as she was at the stadium getting ready to walk onto the pitch as the team’s mascot.

The match was dedicated to the 12-year-old in a bid to raise money for her treatment.

Bailey was diagnosed with a brain tumour after suddenly collapsing one day back in 2008.

Despite doctors operating on her twice to try and remove the tumour it has grown back.

It is wrapped around her brain stem and specialists are worried that if they use the usual forms of radiotherapy on her that it may paralyse her completely.

So Bailey is instead having proton therapy in the USA.

Her family are trying to raise money so they can accompany her out there.

Mum Lisa Coppack, stepfather Graham Ellis, 10-year-old sister Ellie Coppack, a Crossley Fields Junior School pupil, and brother Jamie Ellis, two, will accompany her for half of her 12-week treatment.

Bailey’s father Damian Coppack, stepmother Sue Coppack and half brother Willem hope to accompany her for the other half.

Any money left over from the trip will go to a cancer charity.
