A Cleckheaton-based footwear company has put the boot in with a sporting sponsorship deal.

Goliath Footwear, which took over a Heckmondwike firm that famously made boots for football legend Sir Stanley Matthews, is now backing Cleckheaton Rugby Union Club.

The former Heckmondwike Boot Company dates back to 1880 and its former factory in Thomas Street is being turned into mews homes.

Sir Stanley used to visit the factory to see his boots being made.

Known as the Wizard of Dribble, Sir Stanley made 697 appearances for Stoke City and Blackpool between 1932 and 1965. He also won 54 England caps.

He is best remembered for the 1953 FA Cup Final – dubbed the Matthews Final – when he inspired Blackpool to a 4-3 victory. Sir Stanley died in the year 2000 at the age of 85.

Heckmondwike Boot Company, previously run by the Co-operative Society, was sold to Goliath in 2003.

The firm, now based in Chain Bar Road, Cleckheaton, manufactures safety footwear for many different industries and exports extensively to Australia, South America and Europe.

In the UK it specialises in boots for firefighters and police officers.

The Cleckheaton RUFC sponsorship deal will see the Goliath brand name emblazoned on the shirts for the 2014-15 season.

Abby Steele, the firm’s marketing manager, said: “We are delighted to support our local team and see them do well.

“We hope with a name like Goliath on their chests they can take on any opposition with little fear! They are a great group of lads and we wish them well for the season ahead.”

Cleckheaton RUFC won the North 1 East league title last season and were promoted to the National League Three North. They kicked off the new campaign with a trip to Firwood Waterloo on Saturday.

Cleckheaton RUFC chairman Neil Gillan is delighted with the progress of the club and said: “Getting the support of local businesses is so important for the team and the community.”
