HOW can Huddersfield Technical College justify cutting A-levels? (Examiner March 31). For many students they are the key to university courses and the future.
I have the privilege of teaching some of these students who would otherwise have no future in education. Many of these are from underprivileged backgrounds who have struggled to get to where they are. There are those whose first language is not English, by perseverance they come to the college and are given the chance to succeed.
This is what the college is about, hence the mission statement “Putting the learner and our local communities in the heart of all we do”.
If these proposals go ahead then the interest is clearly that of business and NOT in the interest of the community. It would be interesting to know what the new statement would read, since the present one would have to be discarded.
