Golcar

The men welcomed the congregation to  morning worship at  Providence Methodist Church, Golcar on Sunday. Mrs C Heeley  introduced Mr R Hoyle who led the service on the Good  Samaritan. Mrs B Armitage read from Luke chapter 10 verses 25-37 and Mrs S  Pearson and Miss W Ellis accompanied on the piano. Fellowship  continued after in the schoolroom.

LINTHWAITE

Linthwaite, Marsden and Slaithwaite Domino League held their annual meeting at the Royal Oak last week, when Cheryl Dewhirst was re-elected as Secretary and Sue Haigh as Treasurer. New players and teams are always welcomed and leagues such as these support pubs and clubs, keeping them open. Matches are played on Tuesday nights at various venues and new teams are invited to join the league by contacting Cheryl Dewhirst on 842341 or 07948253239 by the end of July.

Rev Jo Archer-Siddall, leading worship at Linthwaite Methodist Church, continued her theme on the Beatitudes and in particular spoke from Jonah 2 verse 8 – ‘Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them.’  Sue Haigh read the Beatitudes from Mark 5.  Holy Communion was celebrated and Rev Jo was assisted by Sue Haigh and Linda Marshall. There was a retiring collection for the work of the Welcome Centre.

MARSDEN

A service of Sung Eucharist was held on Sunday at St Bartholomew’s led by the vicar, the Rev Geoff Garside. The readings, from Amos 7 verses 7-17 and Colossians 1 verses 1-14, were by Carolyn Hansom. Geoffrey Holroyd, Lay Minister, read the Gospel from Luke 10 verses 25-37 - the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Prayers of intercession were led by Christine Garside. The Junior Church led by David Fisher had activities based on the Gospel. Jon Robinson was the organist. Sideswomen were Susan Everill and Jean Pennington. Coffee was served by Richard Webb and David Corps. Each week there will be a collection of foodstuffs for the Welcome Centre in Huddersfield. Today a service of Sung Eucharist at 9.30am will be held in the Lady Chapel.

During July and August the church will be open each Friday from 10am-2pm when people are welcome to drop in for a quiet time, a prayer or a chat and a coffee. 

The Church Operatic and Dramatic Society presents its Summer Show High and Blighty in the hall from Tuesday to Saturday July 23-27at 7.30pm.  Cabaret seating and Licensed Bar. Tickets £8 available from Duncan's Hairdresser, Warehouse Hill Marsden Tel 845311 (shop hours only).

The United Church Marsden had All Age Worship on Sunday morning to celebrate The Junior Church Anniversary which was conducted by the Minister, Rev Ann Sherratt. The service told of the work done in Junior Church leading up to the day itself. Videos were shown of the children’s activities and work. Stories were told by the Minister and Rachel Hemingway and lessons drawn from what had been heard and seen. There were special hymns and songs. Chris Cook was the organist. Refreshments were served in the hall afterwards by Kathleen Jackson and Rex Bamforth. Following this a Church Meeting was held.

At The United Church Marsden next Saturday there will be a Coffee Morning with home-made cakes from 10am-noon.

MILNSBRIDGE

Milnsbridge Christadelphians’ Wednesday evening Bible class featured  a talk on Nahum by  Peter Simpson from Rochdale. The meeting was led by Kevin Charlesworth. The Sunday services were taken by Paul Rose. The afternoon talk was given by Martin Spencer and the evening talk – Seven Pillars Of Belief –  by Kevin Waterhouse.

Today, Tuesday, at 10.30am, the coffee morning Bible reading group will meet. On Wednesday it will be the quarterly business meeting. On Sunday July 21 at 6pm Jesus The Son Of Man will be the subject at the evening talk. Visitors are very welcome to talks and meetings.

PARKWOOD

A retirement party for Rev Pamela Ward was held at Parkwood Methodist Church on Friday evening, with family, friends and church members. In the chair was Anne Ivy with a This Is Your Life book, followed by a buffet meal.

Marion Lloyd welcomed the congregation to Parkwood Methodist Church on Sunday morning, to a communion service, when preacher was Rev Pamela Ward assisted by Naomi Sharp. After the service a meeting was held with all the church members taking part planning the future. Refreshments by Andrea and Melissa.

A community breakfast will be held at Parkwood Methodist Church on Saturday, July 20, 9.30am-12.30pm.

SLAITHWAITE

At Slaithwaite Good Companions Hilary Ellis introduced  Vintage Brass with 17 players, who provided entertainment. They were conducted by Simon Oliver and began with a rousing march Westwood Ho and  West Side Story, before trombonist John Caywood played Swing Low and other spirituals. John Toothill on tuba gave  Nelly the Elephant followed by Dances with Wolves from Tony Hudson on cornet. The finale was  a Hootenanny selection. Vintage Brass were thanked for a great afternoon by Pat Parkinson and Maureen Weaving was the pianist. Then came a scrumptious afternoon tea  catered by Andrea and seven lucky raffle winners. Now a break of two weeks – back on August 1, Yorkshire Day.

Community Spirit Charity shop celebrated 14 years with a Thanksgiving Service at St James Parish Church. It was led by Rev Jo-Archer Siddall, who read the lesson from Matthew chapter 5, from verse 13 “Salt and Light”. She said many of our goods are brought from families who have lost loved ones and we are handling some of their treasures –we are the custodians. Prayers were led by Errol Salveson and  Shirley Scott was the pianist. This was followed by the annual  meeting, held in the parish room. Chairman Gordon Ellis gave the welcome and elected were Shirley Scott, secretary, Errol Salveson, treasurer, committee almost as last year. Jacqueline Mitchell was thanked for her part on the committee and she will be replaced by Linda Hansom. Errol went through the balance sheet. He said it had been an excellent year, marred only by approximately three weeks of closure during the winter, owing to hazardous snow on the roof and pavement repairs outside the shop. A member of the public asked “do you think you would be missed if the shop was to close?” The answer is: “£33,419 has been donated to 37 various charities throughout the year. The windows were colourfully decorated, thanks to Pauline, Joan and Shirley. Seasonal and topical, there is a community window which is free of charge to advertisers. The shop sponsors Citizens Advice Bureau who hold a surgery every second Friday morning.

St James Parish Church family and holy communion service was led by Canon Michael Storey, assisted by Raymond Denton. The Holy Gospel from Luke chapter 10 verses 25-37, the Parable of the Good Samaritan, was read by Chris Dunkeyson. In his address Canon Michael said it could be about good neighbours and asked “is my neighbour a stranger or is that stranger my neighbour? Canon Michael led prayers and celebration of the Eucharist. Organist was Alvi Whitehead.

 Rev Jo-Archer Siddall was preacher for worship at the Methodist Church. In the second of  five sermons on the Beatitudes she read  from Matthew  and spoke on  “Blessed are those who Mourn”. Organist was Wendy Redfearn.
