Colne Valley Male Voice Choir brought music to pupils’ ears across the valleys as part of their World War One centenary remembrance tour.

The group have been singing rousing yet poignant songs such as ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’ in memory of fallen soldiers to highlight how music kept spirits up in the trenches.

Musical director Thom Meredith has been explaining how songs were used to keep troops upbeat in even the most horrendous trench conditions and remind them of what they were fighting for.

They gave two moving concerts at Scisset Middle School and Shelley First School in the lead up to the anniversary of the D-Day landings, which ended with children marching out of the hall to ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’, and have more planned. Choir spokesman, Matt Houston, said: “The men always enjoy this as it is great to see the children joining in and having a good time. It was quite a poignant atmosphere as it was also the D-Day commemoration anniversary.”

The men have also been encouraging more boys to sign up to their Colne Valley Boys group, which was set up in 2010 to encourage younger people into singing and perform music across a wide variety of styles from folk to pop and world music.

Matt said: “The aim of the choir is to promote male voice singing, provide entertainment to the local community and form lasting friendships between its members.

“The group are always looking for new members and welcome boys between the ages of 8 to 16 years. There is no audition to join, the only requirement is that you enjoy singing.
