COLNE Valley Museum will be hosting a Volunteer's Event this weekend, as part of National Volunteers’ Week.

The museum is always on the look out for new volunteers and flyers have been distributed at two Information points – in Holmfirth and Marsden – and in local libraries, which will entitle potential volunteers to free admission to the museum today and tomorrow –running from 2 to 5pm, both days.

There will be tea and coffee and visitors can chat to volunteers and watch demonstrators to see what opportunities our museum has to offer.

A museum spokesman said: “This is a chance to make new friends, share skills or learn new ones, and learn about this unique local heritage museum, now celebrating its 40th year.

“There are many ways in which our volunteers help – by serving in the shop, making tea and coffee, house-keeping, looking after the artefacts on display, helping with maintenance and the general upkeep of the building, fund-raising, helping to organise special events, demonstrating baking in the Victorian kitchen, dealing with publicity and marketing, helping on our museum stall at local shows, helping with the school visits or showing visitors round the museum and making sure they feel welcome.

“This last item is very important to us, and, judging from the remarks in our visitors’ book, it is also much appreciated by our visitors.

“We also have a year’s programme of training workshops planned, including spinning, weaving, rag-rugging, clog-making and corn-dolly making, for volunteers who would like to learn one – or more – of these traditional skills and demonstrate them to our visitors.”
