SO the Government has given £500,000 to two hospices in our area to help end of life care.

Kirkwood Hospice is getting £77,613 and Overgate Hospice in Elland is receiving £396,000 as part of the Department of Health’s national £40m scheme to improve care for people nearing the end of their lives.

Of course, any Government money must be welcomed.

But it will raise the question once again as to why all governments – no matter what political persuasion – have put so little into hospices over the years.

They run on the goodwill of fantastic support groups and shops endlessly fundraising, supported by the generosity of people in the communities where they are based.

Surely it’s time the Government pledged a percentage of the cost to run each and every hospice.
