IT’S amazing how a simple phone box and cash machine can cause so much discussion.
And BT have finally been taken to task over their actions in St George’s Square.
Last year they installed a dual phone box and cash machine in the historic square without planning consent.
They submitted a retrospective planning application, which was refused.
An undeterred BT returned once more and yesterday Kirklees councillors refused permission once again.
Comments by the chair of the committee, Clr Cliff Preest, summed up the reason why – it would set a precedent.
Whether you would like a cash machine or phone box in the Square is irrelevant – BT should have known better.
They installed a structure in Huddersfield’s finest open space, in the heart of the heritage area and surrounded by listed buildings, without any right to do so.
Had councillors permitted it what signal would that send out?
There is a right way to go about it and that’s through the planning process the rest of us must adhere to.
