IT’S always great to hear some good community news.

And there’s none better than the achievements of Brackenhall residents.

Resident Joan Mallinson has lived in the area for more than 70 years and she understands the need for a community centre.

She, along with other residents, yesterday celebrated as their hope for a community centre moved a step forward. And how lovely that it was Mrs Mallinson who was invited to cut the first sod at the site.

Places like community centres create a sense of closeness, they bring people together, get them out of the house and meeting new people and learning new things too.

They are places for youth clubs where children will make many memories, and for older people to remember times gone by.

The Deighton and Brackenhall Initiative are stumping up much of the £2million needed to build the centre.

And all involved should be pleased their hard work will mean a lot to people for many years to come.
