A town centre tidy-up takes place on Sunday, April 22, at 10am where volunteers will clear debris from the canal with the help of the Calder Navigation Society, Pennine Canoe Club, British Waterways, Sainsbury’s and Prego. Barkisland
Go on a Heritage Walk on Sunday, April 15 at 2.15pm, with guide Anne Kirker who will trace the upland community through the 1,100 years or so since a Norseman called Bark, or Borkr, gave his name to the area. It’s expected to last two hours. Participation is £3 and walkers are asked to meet by the garden opposite Barkisland Post Office.
Calderdale
A Wedding Fayre takes place at The Shay Stadium on Sunday, April 15, from 11am until 3pm with two catwalk shows, discounted wedding packages and over 20 exhibitors. Admission is free.
Enjoy a spring walk from Manor Heath on Thursday, April 12 from 1pm. Meet guide Ruth Wood outside the Jungle Experience, Manor Heath Road, for a choice of two walks. A one mile stroll around the park or a longer walk of 2-3 miles around the local area.Thhe walk is organised by Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees| in partnership with Calderdale Council.
Take a walk on the wild side with daffodils and wildlife around Rishworth on Saturday, April 14 with the Halifax Scientific Society. Walkers are advised to take a packed lunch for the moderate two mile talk which starts at 10.30 am from the car park adjacent to Bowling Green, Ripponden.
The wonderfully-named World Dock Pudding Championships take place on Sunday, April 15 at Mytholmroyd Community Centre. Who will be crowned World Champion as entrants create this traditional local delicacy in this highly competitive event. Watch the action from 1.30pm as cooks prepare a meal of Calder Valley’s finest dock leaves, nettles, oatmeal, onions, butter and seasoning.
